About the Programme
Two Doctoral Scholarships available in The School of Arts and Creative
Industries, London South Bank University. One scholarship will be based
in the Creative Technologies Research Centre (CTRC) and the second one
will be based in the Centre for the Study of the Networked Image (CSNI).
We welcome applications for two, full-time PhD scholarships (£17,668
annual bursary for a period of three years, fee waiver, plus an annual
research expense allowance of £500).
About the School
The School of Arts and Creative Industries at London South Bank
University offers access to excellent film, music and games studio
facilities, including research labs in Volumetric Capture and Virtual
Production at our Elephant Studios centrally positioned near London’s
Southbank, and Virtual Production and Green Screen at Maidstone Studios
in Kent.
The school of ACI has collaborations with arts and creative
organisations in London and across the South East of England such as the
BFI, UK Music, The Rose Theatre, Victoria and Albert Museum, and with
cultural networks such as South East Creative Economy Network
CreativeEstuary, and the Thames Estuary Production Corridor, while our
6.1m European Regional Development Funded Hi3 Network is developing a
network of researchers and small to medium-sized businesses across
London, Essex, Kent, and East Sussex to undertake research in creative
technologies with partners Canterbury Christ Church University, Screen
South, Maidstone Studios, and Creative Folkestone.
Scholarship Call 1: CTRC are seeking proposals that investigate any of
the following concerns or sites of investigation:
Critical, audio-visual interventions on Contemporary Crises
Marginalised experiences and experiences of the margins
Globalised, Transnational and Hybrid Subjectivities
Non-normative Representation and other strategies for addressing
Equality, Diversity and Inclusion
Explorations of moving image technologies, legacy media, images of
history and images as history
Collaborative Modalities and Participatory Practices
Covering any of the multiplicity of moving image practices
(fiction, non-fiction, experimental), their crafts or institutions.
Scholarship Call 2: CSNI are seeking proposals that encourage critical
attention to developing forms of cultural automation through the
application of AI in communication technologies. Of overriding interest
is the question of what part do computational networks and the training
of machine vision algorithms play in shaping the ways in which the world
is seen and how we acquire knowledge and understanding of ourselves and
society.
We are seeking proposals which investigate any of the following:
vernacular image practices; online video practices, onboard image
software; online collections; image databases, imaging labelling and
image taxonomies. Proposals can involve fieldwork, practice-as-research
and discursive methodologies. Proposals can stem from but are not
limited to the following disciplines: computer science, cultural and
media studies, museology, art history, art practice, curating, drama and
performance, anthropology, sociology, and education.

PhD proposal of maximum two A4 pages (please ensure that you use
12pt font)
CV outlining your experience
Names and contact details of two referees

will be automatically disqualified.
Deadline: Fri, 9 December 2022, by 5pm. Send it by email to
(ACI-Research /at/ lsbu.ac.uk) with the subject line: ACI PhD Scholarship
The shortlisted candidates will be interviewed on 15th and 16th of
December via TEAMS, or on campus, at LSBU, and it is hoped that the
successful applicant will register in January 2023. Should this
timeframe be prohibitive, however, we will consider an April start.

Important Note: This PhD scholarship is only open to UK residents who
qualify for domestic fee. Applicants are expected to have a good honours
degree (2.1 and above). You will be required to show proof of all your
qualifications, and you will be asked to supply two academic references
as part of admission process. If English is not your first language you
will be required to prove your competency in English, showing an IELTS
scores of at least 7.0 at postgraduate level.
