[Commlist] Post-doctoral Research Associate advert

Mon Nov 16 18:22:28 GMT 2020

Applications are invited for a Research Associate (RA) position to work on an EU funded research project on age verification technologies. The role is full-time for a fixed period of 9 months from January 2021 with some limited UK and EU travel where possible (subject to any travel restrictions in place).

The RA position is part of an EU funded project to develop an age verification and consent infrastructure for child protection on the internet. The post-holder will develop and lead activities for the academic research team, as part of a broader international consortium of industry and academic partners. The post-holder will apply an interdisciplinary approach to research. The research will identify how age verification requirements are achieved with respect to children across EU Member States, and identify any gaps in the law and key areas of concern. The research will seek to identify how the existing methods of parental consent comply with the relevant legal/regulatory provisions in each Member State, such as compliance with the AVMS Directive and the GDPR, for e.g., privacy by design/default, in the context of child safety and privacy. The RA will also support research that will make a set of child-centred recommendations on the principles and requirements for digital products and services that children use. In doing so, the research will seek to identify the challenges in this regard and propose the core principles to be adopted in the age verification infrastructure that will be developed by the industry partners in the course of the project.

This is an exciting opportunity to work with world-leading experts in an inter-disciplinary and collaborative environment. The candidate will be based at Aston University and will work collaboratively with Prof. Simone van der Hof (Leiden University) and Prof. Sonia Livingstone (London School of Economics and Political Science), as well as other relevant partners of the consortium. The outcome of the project is expected to be a game changer in terms of setting new standards for age verification online, and has potential for significant impact from a technical, policy, and legal perspective.

The ideal candidate will have or be working towards the completion of a PhD (or equivalent experience) in law, social sciences or a relevant discipline, for e.g., socio-legal studies in the digital context. Knowledge of data protection and privacy law, content regulation (for e.g., AVMS Directive), and an interest in children’s rights in the digital environment is essential. Previous experience of working on interdisciplinary research projects is desirable.
