Vacancy 1 > PhD Candidate/Lecturer– Discourses of Digital Citizen Activism ( 1.0 FTE, 5 years)

Job description

We are looking for a highly motivated female PhD Candidate / Lecturer interested in developing her PhD research within the broader topic of the production and circulation of discourses of digital citizen activism. This position for a talented female PhD candidate is funded by an NWO Aspasia grant awarded to Dr. Dumitrica and the Media and Communication department at ESHCC via teaching within the various degrees programmes in this department.

As a PhD Candidate/Lecturer, you will be part of the Erasmus Research Centre for Media, Communication and Culture (ERMeCC) and have ample opportunity to collaborate with renowned academics with an international and interdisciplinary approach.

A Master’s degree in social sciences or humanities with a focus on media studies, communication and culture is required. Familiarity with or demonstrated interest in any of the following is a plus: (digital) activism, social movements, the circulation of ideas, discourse theory and/or representation. In addition, the candidate should possess a demonstrable interest in and experience with qualitative research methods.

Requirements

  * A Master’s degree in a relevant discipline such as media studies,
    cultural studies, or sociology of media, or sociology of social
    movements; a research master is preferred;
  * Knowledge of or proven interest in digital activism, discourse
    theory and/or representation is a plus.
  * Proven affinity for qualitative research, as evidenced by your
    master’s thesis, publications, research plans and other projects;
  * Organisational experience and skills;
  * Strong didactic potential. Prior teaching experience is considered
    an advantage;
  * Being able to collaborate in larger teams (for example, in teaching);
  * A willingness to develop knowledge and skills in various disciplines
    and to increase the ability to teach related subjects within the
    faculty’s degree programme;
  * Proficiency in spoken and written English. Non-English speakers have
    to meet the C1-standards of the Common European Framework (CEF).

Conditions of employment

Employment starts in the fall of 2020, with a preferred starting date of 15 November, 2020. The position will initially be for a term of 1,5 years, which - depending on performance – will be extended with a second term of 3,5 years

Vacancy 2 > Post-Doctoral Researcher / Lecturer (f/m, 0,8 to 1.0 FTE) in the Sociology of Media, Culture and Society

Job description

We are looking for a highly motivated Post-Doctoral Researcher and Lecturer who will both conduct research and fulfill coordination and organisational tasks in the context of a in a large-scale research project funded by the European Commission and teach in our undergraduate and graduate education programmes. The research and organisational tasks will be part of our coordination of the project INVENT: European inventory of societal values of culture as a basis for inclusive cultural policies in the globalizing world. The INVENT consortium will conduct large-scale empirical research in nine European countries to specify how conceptions and values of culture are constructed across different socio-economic groups. Special attention will be paid to people’s perceptions and evaluations of how trends of globalization, digitization and increasing inequalities have impacted culture.

A PhD in Media and Communication, Sociology, Arts and Culture Studies or other Social Sciences is required, with demonstrated competencies in advanced quantitative research methods. In particular, experience with digital research methods is welcomed.  The candidate is expected to possess strong organizational as well as didactic skills and an affinity for working with students.

Requirements

  * A PhD in Media and Communication, Sociology, Arts and Culture
    Studies or other Social Sciences;
  * Strong research and analysis skills, particularly with innovative
    and advanced quantitative methods of data collection and analysis;
  * Proven affinity for empirical research, as evidenced by your

  * A willingness to develop knowledge and skills in new areas and to
    increase the ability to teach a wide range of subjects within the

Conditions of employment

Employment is intended to start 1 January, 2021. The contract runs for a term of 34 months, after a probationary period. Potential for extending the contract is dependent on financing and performance.

Vacancy 3 > Post-Doctoral Researcher / Lecturer Privacy, digitalisation and communication (f/m,1.0 FTE)

Job description

We are looking for a highly motivated Post-Doctoral Researcher and Lecturer that will conduct research in the context of Horizon 2020 research projects funded by the European Commission and teach in our undergraduate and graduate education programmes. The research is focused on the processes of digitalisation and their effects on issues of privacy, workplace surveillance and data protection in the context of digital innovations within the construction industry. With efforts underway to create more sustainable and efficient building practices, digital tools are being used to both reduce CO2 emissions in the development and maintenance phase of construction developments. Together with a team of consortium partners, EUR will be helping to determine effective privacy and security sensitive practices for digitalisation deployment and perform privacy assessments of digitalisation processes. As partners we will actively promote the project work while ensuring that there are effective policies and processes for implementation into business models that are privacy and security sensitive. Lecture duties will be focused on contributing to both our bachelor and master level courses in communication including the supervision of student theses in a related research area.

A (forthcoming) PhD in the field of media and communication, another relevant social science discipline (e.g. business administration, policy, political science, law, economics, sociology, marketing, organizational science), or a technical field (e.g. computer science) that has demonstrated and affinity for social science, is required. Additionally, the candidate is expected to possess didactic skills and an affinity for working with students.

    and communication or another relevant social science discipline or
    technical field;
  * Research and analysis skills, particularly with regards to privacy,
    surveillance and digitalisation;

Vacancy 4 > Assistant Professor (Universitair Docent) (f/m,1.0 fte) in Impactful Privacy Practices and Communication

Job description

The successful candidate is expected to:

Participate and lead work within EU funded Research projects focused on digitalisation (focus on the construction sector) (75%)

  * Lead EUR work alongside principal investigator in evaluating and
    determining effective privacy and security sensitive practices for
    digitalisation deployment within construction sector;
  * Perform privacy assessments of digitalisation processes developed to
    increase sustainability and determine effective means and strategies
    for mitigating potential privacy infringement;
  * Evaluate workplace surveillance issues based on the deployment of
    IoT systems that rely upon AI determined methodologies;
  * Develop effective policies and processes with project partners for
    implementation into business models that are privacy and security
    sensitive;
  * Supervise post-doctoral research and research assistants working on
    related research projects;
  * Develop project based and related empirical research that is
    publishable in established international refereed journals;
  * Contribute actively to the ERMeCC (Erasmus Research Centre for
    Media, Communication and Culture) based MAPS research cluster
    (Media, Artificial intelligence, Privacy, Surveillance/Security);
  * Expand the Department’s national and international research
    connections;
  * Contribute to the acquisition of external research funding from
    national and international funding agencies and other organizations.


Teaching (25%)

  * Perform teaching and supervising tasks for the International
    Bachelor’s programme in Communication and Media (IBCoM) and the
    forthcoming Master’s programme on Digitalisation, Surveillance &
    Societies;
  * Supervise Master’s and Bachelor’s theses in topics related to the
    candidates interests and skills;
  * Make a substantial contribution to the development of both bachelor
    and master level courses in digitalisation, surveillance, privacy or
    related topics;

  * Actively develop pedagogical skills and practices.

Service

  * Contribute to the management tasks of the Department;
  * Take an active part in relevant national and international academic
    networks and organizations;
  * Develop and maintain close contacts with relevant organizations and
    professionals in the related research fields and teaching areas.


    Requirements

The successful candidate considers it a challenge and a privilege to contribute to the ongoing research work of these project and contribute to the educational programmes, specifically the International Bachelor’s programme in Communication and Media and the forthcoming Master’s programme on Digitalisation, Surveillance & Societies at Erasmus University.

She or he has:

·A PhD degree in the field of media and communication or another relevant social science discipline (e.g. business administration, policy, law, economics, sociology, marketing, organizational science);

·A strong research track record, including publications in international refereed journals;

·Extensive knowledge of and ample experience with social-scientific research methods;

·The ability and willingness to develop and conduct cross-national, comparative research with international partners;

·Expert knowledge related to digitalisation, privacy, data protection and/or workplace surveillance;

·Willingness or interest in learning and engaging with the transitioning construction sector and related technology, including BIM and Digital Twin technology developments;

·The potential to generate research funds from national and international funding agencies and to supervise junior researchers and PhD students;

·Prior teaching experience in an international environment with the proven ability to inspire students from undergraduate to postgraduate levels, apparent from positive assessments by students and peers;

·Strong communication and organisational skills and the ability to work closely together with others in an international and diverse team environment;

·Excellent proficiency in spoken and written English. Non-English speakers must meet the
C2-standards of the Common European Framework (CEF).**

Conditions of employment

Employment starts in January 2021.** The intended contract will be for a fixed term of three years. Dependent upon a positive evaluation of progress, funding and student numbers, candidates may be offered a subsequent contract with the department (potentially adjusting research and teaching ratio) after this contract is completed.
