Providing an inclusive, yet multi- layered perspective on leisure 
cultures in dynamic hegemonic, subcultural, and countercultural 
communities, this volume investigates the disciplinary and 
interdisciplinary aspects of leisure studies in the age of mass 
migration, nationalism, cultural wars, and conflicted societies in Israel.

Israeli society has struggled with complicated geopolitical, 
intercultural, economic, and security conditions since the establishment 
of the State of Israel. Consequently, the emergent leisure cultures in 
Israel are vibrant, diversified, exuberant, and multifaceted, 
oscillating between Western and Middle Eastern tendencies. The chapters 
in this edited volume reflect dramatic influences of globalization on 
Israeli traditions, on one hand, and emergent local practices that 
reflect a communal quest of originality and authenticity, on the other 
hand. This book opens up a critical perspective on the tension between 
contested leisure cultures that are interconnected with spatial and 
temporal changes and interchanges.

The book opens with a Foreword by the distinguished leisure studies 
scholar Robert A. Stebbins.

The Introduction to this volume focuses on leisure, conflict, and change 
in Israeli leisure cultures.

The book includes four parts:

- The first part "Freedom, autonomy, and leisure" comprises Michelle 
Shir-Wise's research of leisure, consumption, and freedom, and Tali 
Hayosh's research "Mass vs. autonomous consumption of serious leisure: 
its unexpected byproduct."

- The second part "Nationalized and minorized leisure" comprises the 
study "Shabbat is a space without work" by Elie Cohen-Gewerc, and the 
research "Dark tourism as controversial leisure enterprise in Israeli TV 
satire shows" by Liat Steir-Livny.

- The third part "Consuming leisure, gender, and sex" includes Gilad 
Padva and Sigal Barak-Brandes' research "Naked leisure: recreational and 
domesticated male bodies in an Israeli home design campaign"; the 
research "Playboy as repressive leisure: feminists confronting Israeli 
patriarchy" by Michal Zeevi and Esther Hertzog; and the research 
"Consumption practice: uniformed yet unique? Finding individuality 
within conformist consumer culture" by Tali Hayosh and Rakefet Erlich Ron.

- The fourth part "Leisure communities and communal hobbies" includes 
Sima Zach and Assaf Lev's research "Long-distance running as a  serious 
leisure activity and its influence on relationships within the family"; 
the research "'It's always up to the parents': parents' initiatives in 
response to the challenge of leisure time for children with 
disabilities" by Hagit Klibanski, Orit Gilor, and Drora Kfir; and Shahar 
Gindi and Avital Pilpel's research "The sabra, the genius, and the chess 
player: a socio-historical understanding of competing narratives."

Examining leisure as a part of social, interethnic, physical, gendered, 
and sexual changes, the volume is a key text for scholars and students 
interested in leisure culture, Israeli society, education, cultural and 
media studies, and the Middle East.

* Dr. Tali Hayosh is an accreditation advisor for undergraduate and 
graduate programs, Head of "Tzvet – Best for Education" Program, in Beit 
Berl College, Israel. She is a senior lecturer and her research 
interests are leisure culture, consumption, and leisure education. In 
2018 she authored two books about leisure (in Hebrew): Serious Leisure: 
Culture and Consumption in Modern Society and After the Bell: The World 
of Leisure for Children and Teenagers (the latter with Fadia Nasser-Abu 
Elhija), and also was a guest editor (with Meir Teichman) of special 
Issue of Mifgash on leisure culture of children and youth in Israel (in 
Hebrew, 2018).

* Dr. Elie Cohen-Gewerc is a senior lecturer and researcher in Beit Berl 
College, Israel. He was a member of the board of directors of the Israel 
Broadcasting Authority. The main issues he investigates are freedom and 
the human challenge of being free. He has written various articles and 
four books, including Serious Leisure and Individuality (2013), with 
Robert Stebbins.

* Dr. Gilad Padva is a film, popular culture, men’s studies and queer 
theory scholar. He is the author of Queer Nostalgia in Cinema and Pop 
Culture (2014) and Straight Skin, Gay Masks and Pretending to Be Gay on 
Screen (2020) and co-editor of Sensational Pleasures in Cinema, 
Literature and Visual Culture: The Phallic Eye (2014) and Intimate 
Relationships in Cinema, Literature and Visual Culture (2017). He also 
publishes extensively in international academic journals, international 
collections and international encyclopedias. He currently teaches men’s 
studies and popular culture at the Program for Women and Gender Studies 
with the NCJW at Tel Aviv University, Tel Aviv, Israel.
