CFP Intexto (Brazil) - Flusser 100th anniversary

This May marks the 100th anniversary of the Czech philosopher Vilém Flusser, whom the Nazi persecution of the Second World War brought to Brazil in 1940, where he lived in São Paulo for nearly 30 years. In Brazil, Flusser started his vast work, with themes ranging from the theory of language to human gestures, including the study of translation and concerns about the future of writing.

It is as a media theorist, however, that Flusser became known around the world, mainly for his theories about post-history and technical images. In several fields of knowledge, Flusser is considered a visionary, which makes his work more accessible today than in his day.

Insightful about a highly mediatized and digit-controlled world, Flusser coined concepts that help us navigate the chaotic scenario of Communication in the 21st century, such as "black box", "device", "coding", "technical image" and "philosophical fiction". His disconcerting originality, however, was considered "prophetic", which limited the theoretical contributions of one of the most fruitful bases for thinking about contemporary media production.

Joining Vilém Flusser's centenary celebrations, Revista Intexto, the journal from the University of Rio Grande do Sul's Post-Graduate Program in Communication, invites the academic community to contribute to a special edition to ponder on the importance of Flusserian thinking to Communication and Media Studies. The dossier postulates the following question: what are Vilém Flusser's contributions to the understanding of communication and media processes, and, more specifically, what is his influence on academic research in Communication in Brazil?

The guest editors for this edition are Erick Felinto (UERJ), Marcio Telles (UFRGS), and Osmar Gonçalves (UFC).

Intexto accepts texts written in Portuguese, English, Spanish, French or Italian, with an extension of 25 to 50 thousand characters with spaces, including abstracts and bibliographic references.
