Postdoc in user experiences and hybrid design for museum exhibitions

The IT University of Copenhagen (ITU) invites highly motivated individuals to apply for a Postdoc position starting on 1 August 2020 or soon thereafter, for a duration of three years.

The project is a cooperation between ITU and The Frederiksberg Museums, funded by Ny Carlsbergfondet. The purpose of the project is to explore the potential for sensual user experiences which combine digital technologies with the physical museum spaces and exhibits.

In particular, the project is focused on performance arts and site-specific experiences, exploring how digital media can complement the material museum artefacts and offer experiences that better capture the performative aspect of immaterial heritage, without coming at the expense of authentic encounters with the actual museum space. A fulfillment of this potential requires research to better understand the sensual experiences that the audience currently has at the different venues of The Frederiksberg Museums, as well as an understanding of how we can experience place and presence via digital media. This dual understanding will inform a series of innovative experiments that connect the digital and physical domains in a meaningful way.

The project will focus on two museum venues, representing two different design challenges for hybrid experience design. First, Alhambra - museum for humor and satire is responsible for presenting the heritage of the Danish tradition for humor and satire on stage. This heritage has a strong immaterial and performative dimension, as live performances form a central part of this tradition. Therefore, the project will explore challenges and potentials for bringing the intangible heritage of this tradition to life through hybrid digital/physical designs.

Second, the newly restored historic rooms in Bakkehuset represent a challenge for the integration of digital technologies within an authentic historic interior. How can hybrid designs augment the physical space with digital media to aid engagement and learning without interfering in the encounter with the historic interior?

The project will be carried out in close cooperation with museum staff. Partly to ensure the incorporation of existing knowledge about collections and visitor experiences, but also to embed the knowledge that the project produces within the organization. Therefore, the postdoc will have a dedicated workspace both at ITU and The Frederiksberg Museums.

In addition to contributing to the research activities of the project the candidate is expected to consistently publish and disseminate results and insights from the project in leading scientific journals, as well as participate in relevant scientific conferences and other activities to raise awareness of the project.
