[Commlist] Publications: Syrian audience research and event based monitoring

Free Press Unlimited has recently published two research reports 
concerning the Syrian media sector and Syrian audiences. The 
significance of the unique findings of these qualitative studies is 
critical not only for Syrian  media outlets and professionals, but also 
for international media development organisations and academics working 
in the field of media and communications.
In conflict environments such as Syria where access to unbiased and 
fact-based information is limited, it is of utmost importance for media 
to have access to reliable data on the media landscape and its 
audiences. Research can in fact play a crucial role in giving media 
outlets an overview of where they stand in the wider media sector, as 
well as insight into the needs and desires of audiences. This kind of 
information can support media to better define strategies, become more 
professional, improve engagement with target audiences, and reach out to 
potential untapped audiences.
The studies show that media development can have long-term and far 
-reaching effects in post-conflict Syria in helping fight political 
polarisation and contributing to pluralism. Syrian audiences share the 
definition of independent media and have a strong desire to consume it, 
which is even more relevant today as Syria becomes increasingly media 
dark. With the space for ethical reporting and free press shrinking , 
both studies validate the mission of Free Press Unlimited, which is to 
support emerging media outlets in becoming vital, independent news 
sources for Syrian audiences.
