UEA has some of the most innovative and highly regarded centres for research in the UK. Applications are invited for the post of Senior Research Associate to undertake research under the supervision of Dr. Jamie Hakim in order to study “Digital Intimacies: how gay and bisexual men use their smartphones to negotiate their cultures of intimacies” <https://www.uea.ac.uk/digital-intimacies> which is funded through an ESRC New Investigator’s Research Grant.

The aim of the project is to obtain an interdisciplinary (media & cultural studies and public health) understanding of the ways that gay and bisexual men use their smartphones to negotiate their cultures of intimacy. It will do this through a combination of qualitative, in-depth interviews with 40 gay and bisexual men, discourse analysis of media texts and cultural analysis of contemporary gay and bisexual male cultures.

The Senior Research Associate’s key function within the project is to support the Principal Investigator and Co-Investigator carry out the research. Their main duties will include undertaking qualitative, in-depth interviews with gay and bisexual about how they use their smartphones to negotiate their cultures of intimacy. They will also assist in the analysis of media texts that represent gay and bisexual smartphone mediated intimacies as well as documents that pertain to the material conditions in which these intimacies take place. The Senior Research Associate will also be involved in the writing up and dissemination of research findings as conference presentations, written publications and a podcast. They will also be involved in day-to-day administrative duties and conference organisation.

The research will be based at the University of East Anglia in the School of Art, Media and American Studies in collaboration with Edinburgh University. The project also has partnerships with sexual health organisations Terrence Higgins Trust, London Friend and Waverley Care.

You will hold a relevant postgraduate research degree (PhD) in Media and Cultural Studies or Sociology (or a related discipline) or have equivalent professional experience in the research area. You will have experience of carrying out qualitative, in-depth interviews and have a good understanding of key issues in contemporary gay and bisexual male cultures. You should also have excellent oral and written communication skills, and experience of presenting and writing-up research results for publication in peer-viewed books, conferences and/or journals. You should be able to meet all the essential criteria set out in the Person Specification.

You will be expected to travel to Scotland and London to carry out some interviews, as well as travel internationally for relevant conferences, symposia and research seminars.

This post is available on a part-time (0.6FTE) basis from 1 June 2020 to 13 November 2021.
