[Commlist] Rozhdestvensky and media - Call for papers for Special Issue of Explorations in Media Ecology
Mon Dec 14 17:17:15 GMT 2020
*Call for papers for Special Issue of Explorations in Media Ecology*
In Soviet Union and Russia, the connection between communication
technologies, language and culture has been extensively studied. This
field has been called “General language studies” and “Studies of
culture”. In North America, this field is called media ecology. On two
sides of the iron curtain, scholars were developing similar frameworks.
Since the fall of the iron curtain, the work of McLuhan has been
translated and published in Russian. The works of Yuri Lotman, Roman
Jakobson, and Mikhail Bakhtin are available in English, but have not
been sufficiently applied to advancing the field of media ecology. The
work of Yuri Rozhdestvensky, the founder of the Russian school of media
ecology, has been translated, but not yet published.
We invite the scholars from these two traditions to become more familiar
with and inclusive of each other’s work.
The special issue of Explorations in Media Ecology will introduce the
anglophone community to the work of Yuri Rozhdestvensky, and will
include papers which use the Russian and Soviet theoretical frameworks
and traditions of the study of culture and communication. We hope this
issue will enrich media ecology as a field.
