[Commlist] PhD Studentship (Fees only), ‘Climate justice, media and communication’

Climate justice has figured prominently in the communicative actions of 
the global youth climate strikes, and media engagement with 
intersectional environmentalism has begun to emerge. This PhD 
studentship invites projects that explore the role of media, culture and 
communication in shaping climate justice understanding, engagement 
and/or action. Projects can explore, but are not limited to, topics such 
as climate justice activism, media narratives and representations of 
climate justice and climate crisis, youth/intergenerational climate 
engagement, gender and climate engagement, education for climate 
justice, system change and societal transformations, and can explore any 
aspect of media and communication, including creative and participatory 
approaches.

Funding - This studentship is for a start date in the Academic Year of 
2020/21 and covers the full PhD course fees for a maximum of 3 years FT 
study or the equivalent period in PT study.  The candidate will also 
have a yearly £600 dedicated fund for travel expenses (to use in 
conjunction with fieldwork; training or conference participation). Due 
to the post’s funding it is only open to home or EU applicants

proposal of no more than 1,000 words.

Additional information - We particularly encourage applications from 
groups that are currently underrepresented in the subject area: ie 
students from a black, Asian and minority ethnic group and/or have 
refugee status and gender and sexuality minority groups (LGBTQ+). For 
the purposes of this opportunity, BAME is defined as Arab, Black, Asian, 
Chinese, Mixed minority ethnic backgrounds and Other minority ethnic 
backgrounds.

The applicant will supported by a supervisory team with considerable 
expertise and leadership in climate communications, (digital) activism, 
visual and creative communications, and participatory modes of 
engagement. They will also benefit from being part of an 
interdisciplinary and vibrant research culture in the School of Media 
that is supported by three Centres of Research and Enterprise Excellence 
in: Spatial, Environmental and Cultural Politics; Transforming Sexuality 
and Gender; and Digital Media Cultures.
