As cultural heritage organisations digitise their collections and increase public access, the creative reuse of moving image archive material remains problematic, beset by questions of copyright law, rights clearance and “fair dealing” exceptions. TheArchives for Education <http://www.archivesforeducation.com/>project provides a new model for the creative reuse of archive film in higher education, giving student filmmakers access to 39 films from the BBC and the BFI National Archive for creative reuse on course-related projects for the first time. 55 institutions have signed up to the scheme, allowing student filmmakers to connect their vision of Britain today with archival representations from their parents’ and grandparents’ generations.

This one-day symposium, organised by Kingston School of Art and hosted by BFI Education, reflects on the first full academic year of the scheme andexplores the creative and learning opportunities creative reuse can offer to young filmmakers and how the scheme can be developed within and beyond higher education.

We invite proposals for 20-minute presentations which critically reflect on the topics below or the general theme of creative reuse of archive material, in the UK or internationally:

  * The creative reuse of archive material as a teaching tool – to
    explore film history, the evolution of film practices,
    representation and time
  * Case studies on the use of archive content for student projects, and
    how students have creatively responded to it
  * Creative approaches to working with archive material – what new
    lines of enquiry and methodology can creative reuse open up for
    young filmmakers?
  * Found footage and the audiovisual essay
  * Professional practice around archive licensing, clearance and copyright
  * The ethical considerations of working with archive material
  * Working with archives to open up access to moving image material for
    creative reuse by young filmmakers

To submit a proposal, please send an abstract of no more than 250 words and a 50-word bio to (s.osullivan /at/ kingston.ac.uk) by*March 8th*. We also plan to screen a programme of student films produced through the scheme at the symposium and invite submissions from participating institutions. Please send non-public screening links to (s.osullivan /at/ kingston.ac.uk) by*April 1st.*
