CFP: Exploring Indie – From Animation to Video Games

Friday 28th February 2020, Canterbury Christ Church University

**A one-day researchsymposiumhosted by Canterbury Christ Church University that will take place as part of Canterbury Anifest 2019**

Conference organisers: Darius Malek (Canterbury Christ Church University), Maliha Basak (Canterbury Christ Church University), and Chris Holliday (King’s College London)

Keynote speaker: TBC

The term “indie” has a well-established history of use across the realm of video games, music and film. However, discussions of “indie” often raise questions rather than delivering terminological agreement. Furthermore, many discussions suggest that “indie” is not merely an abbreviation of “independent”, but rather has various meanings to different people throughout the last several decades. Whilst it is perhaps tempting to confine the term “indie” to straightforward characteristics, such a simple definition prevents a greater understanding of “indie” and the distinctive qualities that come with the “indie” term. When applied to the study of animation, what is meant by “indie”: team size, budget, design philosophy, aesthetics?

This one-day interdisciplinarysymposiuminvites proposals for twenty-minute papers, 5-minute micro-talks or video essays that explore the themes of “indie” animation. We also invite the submission of posters, we recommend this being A0 (841 x 1189) and be accompanied by a 5-minute summarisation of your work. Topics might include, but are not limited to:

   *   The production of indie

   *   The history of indie

   *   Indie audience

   *   Indie as a genre

   *   Indie as a development approach

   *   Indie across animation

   *   Interactive animation

   *   Video games

Please do get in touch with Darius Malek ((d.malek333 /at/ canterbury.ac.uk) <mailto:(d.malek333 /at/ canterbury.ac.uk)>) and Maliha Basak ((m.basak918 /at/ canterbury.ac.uk) <mailto:(m.basak918 /at/ canterbury.ac.uk)>) if you wish to discuss possible topics or have any questions regarding the symposium.
