The Hubbard School of Journalism and Mass Communication, College of 
Liberal Arts, University of Minnesota, Twin Cities is hiring a 
Postdoctoral Associate in Media and Computation. Review of applications 
will begin June 1, 2019 and continues until the position is filled.


*Qualifications:*

Essential Qualifications: All candidates must have an earned Ph.D. in 
Journalism, Mass Communication, or a related field by the start-date of 
the appointment and be eligible to work in the United States.

Preferred Qualifications:  Expertise in journalism or mass 
communication, experience in data analysis (regression, 
advanced statistics, and/or network analysis), proficiency with relevant 
data analysis tools including but not limited to R, Python and SPSS and 
experience with machine learning, textual analysis or topic modeling is 
preferred.

*About the Job:*

The Hubbard School of Journalism and Mass Communication (HSJMC), within 
the College of Liberal Arts at the University of Minnesota, Twin Cities, 
extends this invitation for applications for a Postdoctoral Associate in 
Media and Computation. This is a 100%-time appointment as a postdoctoral 
associate (Job Code 9546). The position is for one year and is 
renewable, subject to satisfactory performance and continued 
availability of funding. Start date is flexible. Applicants should

At the University of Minnesota, postdoctoral associates are academic 
employees who conduct research and provide service that enhances career 
skills or allows for opportunities to learn new research. They 
are trained by and work in conjunction with a faculty mentor who 
determines the training agenda. The goal of this Postdoctoral Associate 
position in the Hubbard School is to provide advanced training in media 
and computation. There may be opportunities to teach courses within the 
program. The researcher will work with a cluster of faculty including 
Dr. Matthew Weber, Dr. Benjamin Toff, and Dr. Valerie Belair-Gagnon. The 
post-doc will also take a leadership role in organizing the 
Minnesota Journalism Center’s annual workshop. Limited funds will be 
available for professional development. Responsibilities 
include participating in program planning and evaluation, and engaging 
in training and development activities, as determined in consultation 
with the lead faculty member (Dr. Weber) and the collective research 
team (Dr. Weber, Dr. Toff, and Dr. Belair-Gagnon).

*75% Research: The postdoctoral scholar will design and carryout 
research in the area of media and computation.

15% Publication and workshop development: The postdoctoral scholar is 
expected to communicate their research findings through publication in 
peer-reviewed research journals and taking a leadership role in 
organizing the Minnesota Journalism Center’s annual workshop.

10% Training and mentoring of students: The postdoc will work with 
graduate students in the Minnesota Journalism Center and is expected to 
foster the development of junior center members.
