 We are excited to announce a new position at Arizona State University 
(ASU). Both ASU and our school, Social and Behavioral Sciences, are 
growing rapidly and making enormous progress in diversifying the study

 Assistant Professor of Communication – Communicating Science or Risk 
Communication
 The School of Social and Behavioral Sciences in the New College of 
Interdisciplinary Arts and Sciences at Arizona State University (ASU) is 
seeking a full-time, benefits-eligible, tenure-track Assistant Professor 
of Communication with expertise in communicating science and technology 
or risk communication and communication technology. The current position 
contributes to an undergraduate program in Communication Studies and a 
Master of Arts degree with a focus on communication and advocacy.
 The School of Social and Behavioral Sciences is presently in a period 
of expansion and innovation around new initiatives and new programs. 
Since Fall 2017, the School has added ten new tenured / tenure- track 
faculty. This academic year, the School has been approved to recruit 
five additional tenured / tenure-track faculty, including the current 
position.
 Required Qualifications: The successful candidate must a) have a 
doctoral degree in communication or related field by the time of 
appointment; b) a research agenda that is focused on communicating 
science and technology or risk communication and communication 
technology; c) demonstrate excellence in research commensurate with 
appointment at the level of Assistant Professor at ASU; and d) a 
demonstrated commitment to excellence in teaching.  Desired 
Qualifications: a) research interest that focuses on one or more of the 
following: (1) best practices for communicating with a diverse lay 
public about scientific or technical matters; (2) how to best represent, 
or advocate for, policy, opinion, or behavioral practices in public 
discourse; (3) identification of provenance in public communication via 
traditional or digital media platforms; (4) communication technologies 
(e.g. mobile devices, social networking platforms) as they relate to 
health, environment, and security risks.  b) empirical research 
experience and interests that align with current faculty expertise 
within the School and/or CommLabASU; c) demonstrate potential to 
establish a strong, externally- funded research program; d) demonstrate 
experience in promoting interdisciplinary collaborations in research; e) 
demonstrated ability to teach B.A. and/or M.A. students in this field; 
f) evidence of commitment to undergraduate and graduate mentoring; and, 
g) demonstrated commitment to working successfully with a diverse 
student population, including first generation students. h) experience 
in and skill with addressing issues of equality in the classroom; and i) 
experience in and/or willingness to engage with culturally responsive 
teaching in communication and its importance to students' lives, 
interests, and communities
