Tue May 14 07:46:56 GMT 2019

*CALL FOR PAPERS *

*The Children’s Media Syposium 2019*

*Creativity Rebooted: Platforms and Possibilities*

**

The second biennial Children’s Media Symposium will be held on Australia’s beautiful Sunshine Coast, hosted by the University of the Sunshine Coast’s School of Creative Industries, on November 21 and 22 2019. This year’s CMS will consider how digitisation, participatory and convergence cultures, emergent digital media, and streaming services like YouTube and Netflix have transformed platforms, texts and possibilities for children’s storytelling. We are delighted to announce Professor Julian Sefton Green, Professor of New Media Education at Deakin University is our 2019 keynote.

The 2019 Children’s Media Symposium once again offers opportunities for productive collaboration between the creative sector and the academic community.  This time participants are invited to consider the concept of ‘creativity re-booted’. The reboot is a ‘unique adjunct to the regenerative processes that have historically existed to revitalise, reinvent and recycle textual forms’ (Proctor 2013). Further, the term ‘reboot’ describes broader industrial and institutional efforts to adapt and remake media content, policies and platforms for 21^st century audiences. Reboot encompasses imaginative creative practice that seeks to innovate in, and transform children’s media, including but not limited to screen texts, television-like content, computer games and various online sites, and similarly disrupt more traditional texts including illustrated books, comics, young adult fiction, magazines, and graphic novels.

We invite submission of abstracts of 250 words for individual papers (20 minutes) or suggestions for three-paper panels.

Participants are encouraged to consider topics including but not limited to:

  * Transmedia storytelling for and by children
  * Localisation and globalisation in the children’s mediascape
  * Fluidity between screen to page formats in children’s storytelling
  * Fandom and participatory culture
  * Debates and contentions in children's screen content
  * Innovative modes for producing stories for children, such as in
    digital media
  * The role of digital games and creative learning in children’s lives

The symposium will showcase creative research from a variety of disciplines while allowing industry practitioners to share their creative practice across a range of contemporary media content for children. For more information see www.childrensmediasymposium.com
