The Cathie Marsh Institute for Social Research and methods@manchester are delighted to announce a joint conference, /Methodological Innovations to Meet 21^st Century Societal Challenges/, to be held on 10^th June 2019 at The University of Manchester.  The conference aims to bring together national and international researchers from a variety of social science and associated disciplines. The focus of the conference is methodological innovation in social science research. What new methods are being developed and applied to understand major contemporary social challenges, and how are established research methods being re-thought and designed in new ways for this purpose? We request abstracts for presentations of 20 minutes. Submissions can centre on innovation at one or more key stages of the research process, i.e. from initial research design to data collection, the use of extant data sources, analysis, the presentation and dissemination of results, and engaging with the public. Presentations should aim to explain the rationale for the approach adopted, showcase and outline the methods used, as well as consider the benefits and challenges of the strategy. Possible topics may include (but are not limited to):

Collaborative research design (e.g. participatory action research methods)

Technological and other innovations in data collection (e.g. wearable technology, diary methods, biomedical approaches)

Using existing data sources (e.g. data held by non-government organisations, linking complex datasets)

Methods of data analysis (e.g. tools to analyse large datasets)

Presentation of findings and public engagement (e.g. data visualisation, creative ways of presenting data e.g. public debates and other events)
