[ecrea] Postdoctoral Fellowships at the Digital Life Initiative, Cornell Tech
Mon Nov 26 21:18:48 GMT 2018
The Digital Life Initiative (DLI) is accepting applications for
postdoctoral fellows whose work aligns with DLI's focus on societal
perspectives on digital technologies, focusing on key ethical and
political issues, such as privacy, accountability, access, security, and
fairness. We welcome applicants from a range of disciplines including
computer and information sciences, law, philosophy, data science, media
studies, public policy, and social science whose work is concerned with
ethics, politics, and quality of life.
Fellows will work with Professor Helen Nissenbaum, Director of the
Digital Life Initiative. Depending on areas of specialization and mutual
interest, fellows will have opportunities to collaborate with other DLI
Affiliated Faculty (including Deborah Estrin, James Grimmelmann, Tom
Ristenpart, and Vitaly Shmatikov) and with researchers at other U.S. and
international research institutions. This is a one-year position with
possibility of renewal.
--Qualifications--
Eligible candidates will have received their PhD within the past three
years. We welcome applications from graduating PhD students and junior
faculty seeking postdoctoral positions. Law or MD graduates or ABDs with
strong backgrounds or work experience in related fields are also
eligible to apply.
Fellows are expected to pursue original research in their respective
areas and participate in their research community within Cornell Tech.
We welcome both solo and collaborative projects, which can be guided by
ongoing DLI projects.
Fellows are expected to reside in the New York City area and
participate actively in the intellectual life of Cornell Tech and the
Digital Life Initiative. In addition, Fellows may enhance DLI activities
in various ways, e.g., by arranging or helping to arrange workshops,
conferences, or seminars. Details of such engagement are fluid and
depend on Fellows' interests and institutional need.
--About the Digital Life Initiative--
Embedded within the progressive teaching mission of Cornell Tech on
Roosevelt Island in New York City, the Digital Life Initiative
(dli.tech.cornell.edu) was launched in 2017 to analyze the societal
tensions arising from existing and emergent digital technologies.
Inspired by the core values of justice, democracy, privacy,
responsibility, security, and freedom, we support collaborative research
projects that explore ethics, policy, politics and quality of life
within prevailing socio-technical systems.
Cornell Tech and the Digital Life Initiative offer a unique
opportunity for individuals who flourish in an environment that fosters
close interdisciplinary collaboration. Our robust connections between
computer scientists, engineers, information scientists, legal scholars,
and others, along with our close proximity to the thriving industry and
academic communities of New York City allows Initiative members to
create new research connections.
