Funded AHRC Technē PhDs in Spatial, Environmental and Cultural Politics 
at the University of Brighton
 The Centre for Spatial, Environmental and Cultural Politics (SECP) 
https://www.brighton.ac.uk/secp/index.aspx is currently inviting 
applications for fully-funded doctoral studentships to join our PhD 
programme at the University of Brighton through the AHRC-funded Technē 
consortia (UK applicants only). AHRC Technē covers a broad range of 
arts, humanities and social science disciplines, and encourages 
interdisciplinary research.

The Centre for Spatial, Environmental and Cultural Politics (SECP) 
undertakes interdisciplinary research to address global and planetary 
challenges such as climate change, migration and social inequalities, to 
offer new knowledge and practice for the creation of more sustainable 
and socially just societies. We collaborate with a wide range of 
non-academic partners from the public and private sector to co-produce 
research that seeks to transform lives and communities at local, 
national and global level
Although not restricted to, we welcome proposals that address one or 
more of the following areas:

·                Environmental and climate change
·                Human and non-human migration and mobilities
·                Spatial articulations of power
·                Emergent ecological and social visions
 Potential applicants are advised to identify a potential supervisor to 
work with in formulating their application, and to ensure that the ‘fit’ 
between the proposed project and the research context and environment at 
the University of Brighton is clearly articulated.  Enquiries can be

 The deadline for applications for study at the University of Brighton 
for October 2019 entry is 7 January 2019 (midday) but it is important to 
make contact with a potential supervisor as soon as possible.

 AHRC-funded Technē Studentships

Technē is a Doctoral Training Partnership funded by the Arts and 
Humanities Research Council (AHRC) to create a new model for 
collaborative research skills training for research students across nine 
higher education institutions in London and the South East (Royal 
Holloway, University of Brighton, Kingston University, Roehampton 
University, Royal College of Art, University of Surrey, University of 
the Arts London, Loughborough London, Westminster). . Technē’s vision is 
to produce scholars who are highly motivated and prepared for academic, 
public or professional life.
 Fully-funded studentships (stipend and fee waiver) will be awarded by 
technē to the best students put forward by its member universities. 
Successful applicants will benefit from a rich and diverse training 
programme with a focus on interdisciplinarity and developing career 
potential both in and beyond higher education; and will be able to draw 
on supervisory expertise from across the partnership. The technē 
training programme is enhanced by input and placement opportunities 
provided by 13 partner organisations, including the Barbican, Natural 
History Museum, Museum of London, BFI and the Science Museum.
 Residential eligibility

Applicants must be a resident of the UK or European Economic Area (EEA). 
In general, full studentships are available to students who are settled 
in the UK and have been ordinarily resident for a period of at least 
three years before the start of postgraduate studies. Fees-only awards 
are generally available to EU nationals resident in the EEA.

International applicants are normally not eligible to apply for this 
studentship.
