*Idea and focus:*
Media and information literacy (MIL) is regarded as a crucial competence 
in today’s societies. The concept of MIL combines media and information 
literacy under one umbrella term and includes a range of different 
media- and communication-related competences. The concept has been 
turned out to be very adjustable, covering a wide range of competencies. 
It has become a projectory of a number of political, social and cultural 
expectations and interests, used in very different contexts and adapted 
to a variety of approaches. Meanwhile, the concept has also undergone 
changes, adopting altered meanings, and a large number of similar 
concepts have emerged.

The TransMIL Conference examines different aspects of change in media 
and information literacy (MIL). We are interested, in particular, how 
the crossing of different boundaries – cultural, geographical, 
political, socioeconomic, generational, gender – affects the pedagogies, 
practices and policies related to MIL.

The prefix ’trans’ refers to movement across, though, over, beyond, to, 
on the other side of, or outside of something. ‘Trans’ implies the 
existence of boundaries of certain kind, and the movement, change or 
reconfiguration – a willingness to identify and overcome the boundaries, 
and to learn from these boundary crossings.

What kind of divides and limits are there in MIL pedagogy, practice or 
policies, and how boundaries can be crossed? What can we learn by 
crossing the boundaries? How can the crossing of boundaries contribute 
to increased quality of output? What can be win by crossing the 
boundaries? What is in the marginal of MIL practice, pedagogy or policy, 
and how can we bring it closer to centre?
We invite both scholarly and practice-based presentations that engage 
with boundary crossings. The conference is open to researchers, teachers 
and educational professionals, policy-makers and managers as well as 
graduate and undergraduate students.

*Topics may include, but are not limited to:

- transliteracy and transmedia aspects of MIL: the ability to read, 
write and interact across a range of platforms, tools and media, 
cross-platform media use;
- transcultural aspects of MIL: cultural differences and divides in 
media and information literacy;
- transnational aspects of MIL: geographical and cultural crossings;
- transgenerational aspects of MIL: encounters of different age groups 
and media generations;
- transgender aspects of MIL: definitions and re-definitions of gender 
in the MIL context;
- translations of MIL: transferring MIL practices from one context 
another, comparisons of MIL practices, changes in MIL policies, 
pedagogies and practices
- transparency aspects of MIL in media and journalism practices
- transdisciplinarity of  MIL in digital humanities, media pedagogy, 
communication science, cognitive sciences, and computer science
- transdatafication of MIL in audiences, media and general societies
- transition aspects  of MIL: from reality to virtual reality

*Submission guidelines:*

Abstracts (200 words) should be submitted in English, including a title 
and up to five keywords. Abstracts should include the presenter’s name, 
title and affiliation. Please submit your abstract on December 5 at the 
latest to (millabconference2019 /at/ gmail.com)
The organisers of conference accept panel proposals. Panel proposals 
(500 words) should consist of the title of panel, list of up to 5 
participants, short author’s notes (80 words) that explain affiliation, 
academic interests and most important publications.

The main objective of Erasmus+ funded MIL&LAB project is creation of 
international master study program "Media and Information Literacy" and 
formation a virtual laboratory for development of innovative teaching 
and learning methods for media and information literacy (MIL) needs. In
