[ecrea] Europe in Discourse ΙΙ Call for Papers
Thu May 17 20:27:07 GMT 2018
Call for Papers extended for the 2nd International Europe in Discourse
Conference AGENDAS OF REFORM
Athens, 21-23 September 2018
The 1st Europe in Discourse Conference on Identity, Diversity, Borders
used the lens of discourse analysis to talk about Europe and the
challenges it faces. Back in September 2016 we were happy to see the
wide participation from discourse analysts, linguists and communication
experts. The Conference closed with an open commitment for a second
conference in 2018 with a greater interdisciplinary character.
The 2nd Conference under the Europe in Discourse initiative delivers on
that promise for interdisciplinarity but remains very much focused on
the need to engage discourse analysts to discuss the pressing topics
around the future of Europe. Since any discussion about Europe is also a
discussion about values, interculturalism and the clash of
civilizations, it is ultimately about discourse as well. A multifaceted
conference like Agendas of Reform could not achieve its potential
without the presence of discourse analysts. Your response to the call
for papers is therefore of maximum importance.
Discourse plays an important role in any discussion about Europe.
Talking about the topics that have informed Europe cannot be divorced
from the language that was used to construct it in the first place. How
could one talk about Islam and EU without looking at the cultural
assumptions that underlie the variant national discourses? How can we
talk about enlargement or integration without looking at the discourses
prompted by Brexit? How can we construct a new narrative about Europe
without evaluating the values and the discourses that will shape it?
Data for analysis can be drawn from a variety of sources: Media texts,
social media material, key texts that have informed the making of Europe
such as the 1957 Treaty of Rome, or the 1991 Maastricht Treaty,
anti-immigration speeches by political leaders such as Viktor Orbán in
Hungary or Marine Le Pen in France can provide interesting areas of
discourse-oriented research.
Europe in Discourse is an initiative that builds on the premises of what
Teun A. van Dijk calls “Discourse in Society". We invite you, therefore,
to take part in a conference that will foreground long socioeconomic and
political problems of Europe through the lens of discourse analysis. We
continue to seek your input as linguists and discourse analysts to
diagnose the discursive template(s) that make up Europe today and shape
the various European identities.
We particularly welcome contributions on the following Conference Themes:
- The Refugee crisis in EU discourses - Anti-immigration and discourses
of fear
- Historical, geo-cultural, geo-economic and geopolitical aspects of
European identities
- Europe: super-diverse and globalized - Images of crisis and recovery
in Europe - Conceptual blending, discourse and metaphors about Europe
- Populist discourses and the EU
- Educational discourses in the EU
- European diversity through religion and culture
- Discursive constructions of borders - Political discourse in the
European Union - Media constructions of European identities - EU
multilingualism
- Linguistic plurality in EU

Evaluation Process
All abstracts will be blind peer-reviewed and ranked by the Conference

degree to which the presentation makes a contribution to the development
of the discipline, points to future research agendas, or presents
innovative or interdisciplinary approaches, including novel
collaborations or syntheses across sub-disciplines or with other related
disciplines. A proposal may be given higher priority if clearly linked
to one or more of the conference themes.

Notification of acceptance of oral communications and panels will be
sent by July 1st, 2018.
