A brief reminder that the deadline for our June symposium is coming up - please submit your proposed papers on cultural translation by *16 May 2018*. Further details below.

Event date: 21 June 2018

Venue: Birmingham City University

Title: Postgraduate Symposium on Cultural Translation

Proposals are invited for papers to be presented as part of our symposium on cultural translation at Birmingham City University. The papers should explore questions of cultural translation in contemporary Media, Communication and Cultural Studies research. The one-day event will be held on Thursday 21 June 2018 and will be an opportunity for Postgraduates and Early Career Researchers working in the area of media studies, cultural studies, translation studies, area studies, and related fields, to present their research. Although open to a wide range of responses, we are particularly interested in the following areas:

* The role of cultural translation in culture studies and media studies

* Critical perspectives on cultural translation as a concept/term
* Intermediality, translation between different cultural forms, and adaptation

* Cultural translators as/and/versus cultural intermediaries

* Cultural translation and politics - including questions of erasure, representation, and appropriation

* Cultural translation in relation to ideas of 'third space', 'hybridity' and the 'in-between'

* Failures in cultural translation

Keynote Lecture: Dr Sarah Maitland (Goldsmiths, University of London).

Proposals for papers should be approx 300 words in length and should be sent to *(james.hodgson /at/ bcu.ac.uk)* no later than 16 May 2018 with a short bio-note. Postgraduates, Early Career Researchers, and junior academics welcome.

About the speaker:

*Dr Sarah Maitland* is Senior Lecturer in Translation Studies <http://www.gold.ac.uk/ecl> at Goldsmiths, University of London, where she leads the MA in Translation <http://www.gold.ac.uk/pg/ma-translation/>. She is an elected member of the Executive Council of the International Association for Translation and Intercultural Studies <https://www.iatis.org/index.php/about-us/who-we-are/executive-council/iatis-current-council> and member of the Editorial Board of the Journal of Specialised Translation <http://www.jostrans.org/>, and is author of /What is Cultural Translation?/ <http://www.bloomsbury.com/uk/what-is-cultural-translation-9781472526274/> published by Bloomsbury Academic, and various articles <http://research.gold.ac.uk/view/goldsmiths/Maitland=3ASarah=3A=3A.html> on cultural translation, translation philosophy, theatre translation, and hermeneutics.

Segal Theatre New York, the Theatre Royal Bath, the Unicorn and New Diorama theatres in London and the Rose Bruford College of Theatre and Performance. Her most recent work includes translating for surtitles at the 2017 CASA Latin American Theatre Festival and guest editing the December 2016 edition of /Words without Borders/ entitled, ‘The World on Stage: Micro-Plays in Translation’ <http://www.wordswithoutborders.org/issue/december-2016-microplays>.
