*The Electric Guitar in American Culture*

October 12-14, 2018

It is a pleasure to invite scholars, performers, fans, and the general public to attend and participate at “The Electric Guitar in American Culture” on October 12-13-14, 2018, in Lubbock, Texas, original home of Buddy Holly and the Flatlanders, along with many other greats. The conference is organized by the Vernacular Music Center at the School of Music at Texas Tech University.

Objectives and Themes: The program committee invites papers, panels, and creative presentations on every possible facet of the electric guitar in American culture: popular, vernacular, and cultivated musics; technology, material culture, social geography; commerce, design, marketing; semiotics, organology, reception and/or performance studies, music and gender, and wider topics.

Special Student Conference: The program committee also invites submission of abstracts of papers for inclusion in a special Student Conference on Friday, October 12th. (Please note: Student papers should be clearly identified as such; students submitting abstracts are requested to include a short note from a supervising faculty member endorsing the submission.)

Topics of interest include Buddy Holly, Fender Guitars, the “vernacularization” of the electric guitar, vernacular musics of Texas and the American Southwest, electric guitar and amplifier design, guitar iconography. But proposals on all aspects of the Electric Guitar in American Culture will be considered.

Smith PhD (TTU Musicology); Michael Borshuk (TTU English Dept.); Robert Peaslee PhD (TTU College of Media and Communication); Rob Weiner (TTU Libraries); Kent Wilkinson PhD (TTU College of Media and Communication); Aliza Wong PhD (TTU Honors College).

Abstracts: Deadline for abstracts (MS Word format) is June 1st, 2018. Paper abstracts should be no more than 250 words. Panel abstracts of 250 words, with additional abstracts for each individual paper (3 or 4 papers per panel). Email abstracts in MS Word to: (roger.landes /at/ ttu.edu). Authors of accepted papers/panels will be notified by July 1st, 2018.
