The Faculty of Social Sciences invites applications for the position of
PROFESSOR IN MEDIA AND COMMUNICATION STUDIES
for a fixed term from 1 August 2018 to 31 December 2021 (locum tenens).
Founded in 1640, the University of Helsinki is one of the best
multidisciplinary research universities in the world. The University of
Helsinki is an international academic community of 40,000 students and
staff members. It operates on four campuses in Helsinki and at 15 other
locations. The high-quality research carried out by the university
creates new knowledge for educating diverse specialists in various
fields, and for utilisation in social decision-making and the business
sector.
The Faculty of Social Sciences is Finland’s leading research and
education institute in the social sciences, and the country’s most
diverse social sciences faculty in terms of the range of its disciplines
and fields of research. The Faculty has a strong international research
profile and an international MA programme, and several of its
disciplinary units, including anthropology, have been rated among the
top 50 in the world. The Faculty has approx. 350 research and teaching
staff, and each year it awards some 350 Bachelor’s degrees, 400 Master’s
degrees and more than 40 doctoral degrees. For more information, please

The position will be placed in the discipline of media and communication
studies, which has two professorships, one associate professorship and
two university lectureships in addition to the current professorship.
The discipline also has approximately 20 researchers and doctoral
students and annually awards some 30–35 Master’s degrees and from two to
four Licentiate and doctoral degrees.
The professor conducts top-level international research, provide
teaching based on such research, and supervise theses and doctoral
dissertations. He or she is expected to also participate in doctoral
training and the development of teaching, as well as to be able to
acquire research funding.
QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS
An appointee to a full professorship is expected to hold a doctoral
degree, have top-level scholarly qualifications and experience in the
supervision of scientific research, along with the ability to provide
top-level research-based teaching as well as to supervise theses and
dissertations. In addition, the appointee shall present documentation of
international cooperation in the field of research that he or she
represents. Holders of professorships shall also have the skills
necessary to serve as academic leaders.
According to the Government Decree on Universities must be proficient in
Finnish. They must also have at least satisfactory spoken and written
skills in Swedish. To successfully attend to the duties of the position,
the appointee must have good English skills because he or she will also
serve as the director of the Master’s Programme in Global Politics and
Communication. Foreign citizens, non-native Finnish citizens or citizens
who have not been educated in Finnish or Swedish may be exempted from
this requirement without a separate application.
SELECTION CRITERIA
In the assessment of the applicants, attention will be paid to research
and teaching qualifications in media and communication studies. When
filling this fixed-term position, consideration will be given to the
fact that the discipline needs special resources for research on public
life and the teaching of organisational communication. With a view to
the administrative duties of the position, the appointee is expected to
have experience in the management of teaching and research. Knowledge of
social theories and the ability to engage in cooperation with other
researchers focusing on society, culture and politics will be regarded
as further assets.
When considering the applicant’s qualifications, attention shall be
given to scientific publications and other research results of
scientific value, teaching experience and pedagogical training, the
ability to produce teaching material, other teaching merits and, if
necessary, a demonstration of teaching skills as well as of the
applicant’s participation in doctoral education. Account shall also be
taken of the applicant’s activity in the scientific community, success
in obtaining external research funding, international research
experience and international elected positions, and leadership and
interaction skills.
SALARY
The salary for the position will be based on levels 8−10 of the
requirement scheme for teaching and research positions in the salary
system of Finnish universities. In addition, a salary component based on
personal performance will be paid. Annual gross salary for a full
professor varies between 64,000 and 96,000 euros, depending on the
appointee’s qualifications and experience. For information on the

The successful applicant may be appointed to a professorship or a
fixed-term associate/assistant professorship (tenure track system),

The position will be placed in the discipline of media and communication

dissertations. In addition, the appointee shall present documentation of
