[ecrea] Research Fellow Opportunity - postdoc on Beyond the Metropolis
Thu Sep 21 11:23:40 GMT 2017
An opportunity has arisen for a postdoc research fellow to work with me
on the following project:
"Beyond the Metropolis: Regional Film and Television Clusters in the UK
outside London", which scopes the location, size and significance of the
UK’s film and television industries beyond the capital. This will
include the nations (Northern Ireland, Scotland and Wales) as well as
the English regions (e.g. Greater Manchester). The postholder will draw
together material on concepts of region and place and on how ‘creative
clusters’ and ‘cultural ecologies’ are thought to function, and
construct a database of information about regional film and television
clusters in the UK based outside London, including key companies. You
will help to formulate the best methodologies (quantitative and
qualitative) through which to analyse how these clusters work, including
the historical, social, cultural and political contexts that help shape
them. You will undertake the organisation, planning and delivery of a
two-day symposium where these issues will be debated and will assist
Professor Spicer in the preparation of a major research bid analysing
regional film and television creative clusters in the UK.
This is an exciting opportunity for an ambitious and focused researcher
to develop work in an evolving interdisciplinary field that draws from
film and television studies; media industries studies; cultural studies;
cultural and economic geography; and organisational, business and
management studies. It is timely and topical given the current concerns
about regionalism (e.g. Metro Mayors), devolution, and the stated aims
of the government and major institutions (BBC, Channel 4, BFI) to
encourage film and television production outside London. You will work
within the Moving Image Research Unit, which contains a range of staff
and doctoral students investigating the histories, theories, aesthetics,
cultures and politics of moving image production, interaction and reception.
The role is .5 for 5 months (1 November 2017 – 31 March 2018) days and
hours per week by negotiation.
Deadline: 4 October.
