THE DEPARTMENT: The Department of Communication prepares students for
success through acquisition of knowledge and skills in communication
theory and research, critical analysis, speaking, writing, digital
media, and journalism. Students learn to understand our ever-changing
contemporary media environment, and the long history of the
relationships among communication, self, and society. In so doing, they
are prepared for a broad array of career paths.
A distinguished faculty, fully equipped studios/labs: (Newspaper;
Broadcast/Video Production; Advertising; Communication Tutoring), the
Public Relations Student Society of America, the Department’s speech and
debate club, and a dynamic graduate student body all afford students
opportunities and skills to make positive, professional, and significant
contributions in the communication field. The Communication Department
enjoys a highly diverse student-body with over 550 undergraduate and
over 30 graduate majors.
The Department currently offers two undergraduate options: Media
Production (including journalism and video production), and
Professional, Public and Organizational Communication (including public
relations and advertising). Beginning in 2018 with the conversion of the
campus to the semester system, the Department will offer three brand new
concentrations: Communication and Media Studies, Strategic
Communication, and Multimedia Journalism.

DUTIES OF THE POSITION: The successful candidate will teach coursework
at all levels in the Department of Communication with a primary focus on
quantitative communication research (emphasizing social media content);
degree coursework within the three program concentrations of Strategic
Communication, Communication and Media Studies, and Digital Media
Journalism; and other coursework as assigned. When necessary, the
successful candidate will lead in the design and conducting of surveys
(and other research) for the Department’s various needs in serving
students, and the Department and University’s goals. They will mentor
and teach a diverse student body, and is expected to respect the varied
(inter)disciplinary specialties represented in the department. In
addition to teaching, all faculty have advising responsibilities, assist
the Department with administrative and/or committee work, and are
expected to assume campus-wide committee responsibilities.
Please note that teaching assignments at California State University,
East Bay include courses at the Hayward, Concord and Online campuses.
RANK AND SALARY: Assistant Professor. Salary is dependent upon
educational preparation and experience. Subject to budgetary authorization.
DATE OF APPOINTMENT: Fall semester, 2018
QUALIFICATIONS
REQUIRED: Ph.D. in Communication (or a related field) at the time of
appointment with an emphasis on content analysis and quantitative
methods. ABD candidates may be considered, however, the degree must be
in hand at the time of appointment. Demonstrated research record.
Evidence of teaching effectiveness.
PREFERRED: A contemporary critical focus and an ability to articulate
the importance of critical communication research in the classroom. A
research emphasis on social media discourse and its socio-cultural
implications. An ability to teach, mentor, advise and work with students
from diverse educational and cultural backgrounds, graduate students,
and generally contribute to student life initiatives on campus.
DESIRABLE: Demonstration of a research record and promising works in
progress, published scholarly works, and plans for a sustained program
of research. Evidence of effective teaching and the ability to teach
across the curriculum. A desire to work with faculty across the campus.
Candidates should demonstrate experience in teaching, mentoring,
research, or community service that has prepared them to contribute to
our commitment to diversity and excellence. Additionally, applicants
must demonstrate a record of scholarly activity.
