The sixth annual International Symposium on Media Innovations (ISMI)
16-17 October 2017 - Tallinn University, Estonia. The symposium is
organised by Tallinn University Centre of Excellence in Media Innovation
and Digital Culture (MEDIT).
The symposium will be held in Tallinn, Estonia, immediately before the
AoIR 2017 conference in another Estonian town Tartu (18-21 October).
The symposium will unite academic researchers and industry
representatives to discuss how innovations happen in contemporary media.
The symposium is oriented both towards theorisation of media innovation
phenomena as well learning about evidence, innovation strategies and
considering their policy implications.
The focus of ISMI is on the dynamics of change in all kinds of
contemporary media. We aim to explore how the complex interrelationships
between changing technologies, economic environment, modes of usage or
policy imperatives bring about the transformation of the media industry.
The symposium will work towars a dialogue between media industries and
academic media resereach.

Submission deadline: 750-word extended abstracts due 15 May 2017
We invite submissions for papers on any aspect of media innovation,
including the following topics:
* Management of media innovation
* Alternative economic approaches to media innovation
* Innovation policies vs. media policies
* Innovation in media policies
* Media innovation systems
* Political economy of media innovation
* The role of start-ups in innovating media systems
* The role of social innovation in media systems
* User-driven innovations in media
* University and industry cooperation in facilitating media innovation
* Media co-innovating with other industries (education, health care,
tourism, etc.)
* The role of platforms in media innovation
* Fake News as a disruption to media industries
* Data driven innovations in media
* Mobile and location based media innovations
* Sharing economy and media innovation
* The role of cross- and transmedia in innovating media
* Virtual and augmented reality as drivers of innovations in media
* Innovations in alternative media
* Innovation in distribution and delivery (reaching the audience in new
ways)
* Innovation in advertising formats and strategies.
* Failed innovations: new products that did not succeed.
Submissions will be peer-reviewed. Extended abstracts of proposed
papers, 750 word

Deadlines and Dates:
15 May, 2017: extended abstracts due
June, 2017: notice of acceptance
15 September, 2017: full papers due
Best paper award will be announced during the conference. Selected
papers from the symposium will be published in a special issue of the
Journal of Media Innovations (https://www.journals.uio.no/index.php/TJMI/)
