Creates Opportunity for Unity and Action Amidst Political Division*

/Educators, Scholars, Policymakers, Media Professionals and Community 
Organizers Called to Participate in Chicago, June 27-28/

(Chicago, IL – December 13, 2016) –The 2017 National Association for 
Media Literacy Education conference

Chicago, Illinois, from June 27-June 28, 2017 at Roosevelt University 
and will highlight the vital role of media literacy in civic 
participation and a healthy, inclusive democracy.


The conference theme, “Engaging Citizens, Building Community,” 
encapsulates the NAMLE conference’s objective to bring stakeholders 
together to advance media literacy education policy and practice. 
Educators, scholars, policymakers, media professionals, elected 
officials, and community members will gather together to address 
different perceptions of media’s role in a deeply divided political climate.

“The time is now to recognize the critical need for media literacy 
education and civic engagement. Our 2017 NAMLE conference intends to 
spark much needed dialogue between a variety of stakeholders,” says 
NAMLE’s Executive Director, Michelle Ciulla Lipkin. “We need to work 
together to generate solutions and brainstorm effective education 
policies to combat the issues dividing our country.” More information

NAMLE is calling for presentation and session proposals that target the 
conference theme. Possible areas of focus include (but are not limited to):

· Media, activism and social change

· Civic engagement

· News literacy

· Youth media


Sessions can involve individual presentations, panel discussions, 
interactive workshops and other innovative formats. Cutting edge 
research, creative projects, compelling models, innovative approaches to 
and best practices in media literacy education are encouraged. Scholars, 
educators, media professionals, students, activists and public officials 
interested in furthering media literacy education are encouraged to

is January 4, 2017.

“We see this gathering as an important time to explore the role media 
literacy plays in enabling citizens to fully participate in our 
democracy,” says Tony Streit, NAMLE Board member, Director of the 
YouthLearn Initiative at Education Development Center, Inc., and the 
2017 NAMLE Conference Chair. “We hope to engage all attendees in open 
discussion on how best to help learners truly build the skills necessary 
to navigate an ever increasingly complex media landscape.”

Program Chair Benjamin Thevenin, Assistant Professor of Media Arts at 
Brigham Young University, adds “…while it’s important that we consider 
media’s coverage of politics, if we are truly to understand the 
relationship between media literacy and civic engagement, we need to 
look at the role of networked, digital media technologies in civic 
discourse and participation - in the conversations we’re having and the 
actions we’re taking.”
