Big Data Postdoctoral Fellow Position at Edith Cowan University in 
Western Australia

The emergence of new media forms has led to a profound transformation of 
the Australian media environment: mainstream, niche, and social media 
intersect in many ways, online and offline. Increased access to 
large-scale data on public communication online enables an observation 
of how the nation responds to the news of the day, how themes and topics 
unfold, and how interest publics develop and decline over time.

Edith Cowan University has joined a consortium of Australian 
Universities in an infrastructure project that takes advantage of the 
emergence of new social media forms drawing on several ‘big data’ 
sources on Australian public communication. This increased access to 
large-scale social media data will help with observation and analysis of 
how Australians react to events and create themes and topics of interest.

The Post Doc appointment will support the candidate’s ability to 
investigate intermedia information flows in Australian on any number of 
humanities’ topics. While the candidate will be encouraged to work on 
their own research project/s, they will also be expected to collaborate 
with other ECU researchers to ensure other researchers’ access to big 
data. A DATD will also be available to facilitate this process. This is 
also an exceptional mentoring opportunity and allies the postdoc 
recipient with a highly productive team of researchers.
