*Call for Chapters: Emergent Feminisms: Challenging a Postfeminist Media Culture____*

We are inviting abstract submissions for a proposed anthology edited by Jessalynn Keller (University of Calgary, Canada) and Maureen Ryan (Northern Illinois University, USA).____

Over the past decade, feminist media scholars have described popular media culture as dominated by a “postfeminist sensibility” (Gill 2007), characterized by a disavowal of feminist politics (McRobbie 2009) and the dominance of neoliberal discourses that promote individualism, success in the capitalist marketplace, and heterosexual romance to women and girls. However, over the past several years, feminist politics have become increasingly prevalent in both activist and commercial media across various parts of the globe, complicating the logic that feminism is in retreat. What are the reasons for and politics of this “feminist zeitgeist” (Valenti 2014)? What does it mean for women and for media culture in different global and local contexts? Which feminisms attain mediated visibility and which remain marginalized? ____

Guided by these questions, we seek chapters for an edited collection that historicize, interrogate, and/or problematize postfeminism as the dominant framework with which to understand gender politics within contemporary media culture.

In particular, we are interested in scholarship that engages with non-white and non-western texts, practices, and theories.____

Chapters may address the following topics:____

* Global/regional feminist media practices, especially from Africa, Asia and/or Global South nations____

* Inclusion or marginality of women of color, with respect to feminism and/or feminist politics____

* Queer and trans alliances with feminist media and/or feminist politics____

* The mediated feminist politics of Beyoncé or other female public figures of color____
