[ecrea] 'Media Environments'-Keele University-Free Workshop-26 May 2016

MEDIA ENVIRONMENTS, a one-day event taking place at Keele University on 26 May, will examine the role of media as a means of addressing contemporary and historical issues of environmentalism and ecology. Drawing on the practices of artists, academics and activists, via panel discussions, workshops and a World Café, the event will focus on the aesthetics and ethics of media representation, with regard to the environment, the sustainability of media and its place within a ‘green economy’, and media’s use as a tool in environmental politics and activism.

ARRIVAL & OPENING:

9.30am-9.50am: Coffee

9.50-10.00: Welcome

10.00-11.30: GASLAND & TEAR GAS: ENVIRONMENTAL ETHICS & AESTHETICS

Claire Molloy, on the impact of activist film Gasland

Anna Feigenbaum, on bridging media theory and practice in relation to tear gas activism

11.30-11.45: BREAK

11.45-12.15: TRANSLATING EXPERTISE

Conohar Scott on combining and mobilizing different kinds of expertise (photography, science and graphic design) for advocacy against environmental pollution

Roundtable/discussion, based on the morning

1pm-2pm: LUNCH

2.00-4.30: ENVIRONMENTS, EXPERTISE & ETHICS

2pm-3pm: Workshop: gearing research to advocacy (With Anna Feigenbaum and members of Minute Works graphic design)

3pm-4.30pm: Film extract: Nuclear Hallucinations (2016, dir. Fathima Nizaruddin), leading into world café on ethics and representation

4.30: CLOSE
