Accelerated transformations in the political environment have taken 
place in countries in Latin America, with the emergence of new 
conservative political forces in the public scene in Argentina, Uruguay, 
Venezuela and Peru, which has made election disputes tenser. 
Furthermore, in Europe, democracy has been tested and pushed to its 
limits after the crisis of the Syrian refugees, the attacks in Paris and 
the Greek economic crisis.

In Brazil, the protests of June 2013, the 2014 presidential elections, 
the feminist protests in the social media and on the streets in 2015, 
the conservative offensive at the National Congress and the current 
discursive scenario of social-political crisis are some of the factors 
that have contributed to the reconfiguration of the political dynamics, 
the relations between opposition and government and the Brazilian social 
agenda itself. Successive denouncements of corruption and the increase 
of public opinion polarization have also contributed to the 
intensification and rousing in the national public debate.

Amidst these multiple interfaces, the democratic system, regardless of 
each country's singular characteristics, is going through a critical 
moment, by being put to check as a model that ensures the rights to all 
citizens. Facing this scenario, how does Journalism respond (or should 
respond) to the challenges imposed by new social agendas and actors, 
representativeness crisis, political mediatization, elites 
rearticulation each time more globalized and fragmentation of political 
forces related to the social movements?

How deep has Journalism contributed to the maintenance and/or renewal of 
democracy in these different countries? Have the principles of plurality 
of points of view and the diversity of voices been observed in the 
political coverages? Do the social actors have room in the political 
news or are the traditional agenda negative themes and approaches about 
politics repeated? Have new focuses – problematizing, contextualizing, 
less founded on preconceptions, ideological opinions or alignments more 
or less explicit – been searched in the coverage? Or, are the supposed 
elite backstage maneuvers, the negotiations among party groups, the 
political folklore and denouncements of all kinds emphasized?  Has 
democracy been valued in the journalistic discourse and praxis?

In view of this context, Brazilian Journalism Research – BJR invites 
the researchers to participate in the Dossier "Journalism and 
Democracy", which will receive articles that contemplate the diversity 
of theoretical, epistemological, methodological and empirical approaches 
of the investigation about the relations between Journalism and Democracy.

With this Dossier, we hope to publish texts that focus on the multiple 
dimensions of the relations between Journalism and Democracy, especially 
the interactions between sources and journalists in democratic and 
authoritative environments, the limits of freedom of expression, 
journalism, social media and political mobilization, journalistic 
coverages about political scandals and denouncements, election 
coverages, political journalism and new social actors, plurality and 
diversity in journalism, new themes in the political journalism.

The articles must be submitted until March 5, 2016 in order to be 
selected for the issue 2.2016, to be published in August 2016.

The length of the texts must be between 30 thousand and 40 thousand 
characters with spaces.

As the Brazilian Journalism Research publishes two versions of each 
issue (Portuguese/Spanish and English), the authors of the articles 
accepted submitted in Portuguese or Spanish must provide their 
translation to English. Likewise, the articles submitted and accepted in 
English must be provided with the translation to Portuguese or Spanish.
