[ecrea] PhD scholarship available – Music Industries and Digital Platforms (Swinburne University, Melbourne)

We invite applications for a PhD scholarship with additional top-up funding based at Swinburne University Hawthorn campus, Melbourne, Australia.

This PhD project forms part of an Australian Research Council Linkage project, Music Usage Metrics and the Future of the Australian Music Industry (2016-2018), which investigates how digital platforms and subscription services are affecting various sectors of the music industry.

Working with a team of leading academics at Swinburne and QUT, the successful candidate will conduct a series of interviews with artists and music industry professionals and will develop an original project on music industries and digital technology. Indicative areas of investigation include, but are not limited to:
-    impact of digital distribution on specific music genres/scenes
-    streaming services and live music culture
-    digital music marketing
-    audience intelligence in the Spotify era
-    record labels and digital aggregators
-    local economies of digital distribution

Applicants should have a first-class Honours degree in a relevant humanities or social science field (e.g. media and communication, sociology, anthropology, cultural studies, law, economics), or equivalent industry experience, along with a keen interest in the topic area. The successful candidate will have the opportunity to work closely in a supportive environment with an interdisciplinary team of media and culture researchers conducting cutting-edge research on topics including digital platforms, music industry economics and intellectual property.

In addition to a PhD stipend of $25,849 p/a, the successful candidate will receive top-up funding of $5000 p/a as well as travel funds and other project support.

The PhD project will be based at the Swinburne Institute for Social Research (www.sisr.net), under the supervision of Dr Ramon Lobato (SISR Senior Research Fellow) and Prof Dan Hunter (Dean of Swinburne Law School). SISR is one of Australia’s largest humanities and social science research centres, with an outstanding research culture and a long tradition of producing cutting-edge research in the field of media and communication.
