The Grady College at the University of Georgia invites applications for 
a tenured or tenure-track position in Entertainment and Media Studies to 
begin August, 2016.

Academic Rank/Salary
Assistant or Associate Professor. Appointment will be commensurate with 
qualifications and experience.

Responsibilities
The Department of Entertainment and Media Studies seeks an individual 
with theoretical and/or applied expertise in Production Studies and 
Creative/Entertainment Industries. Scholarly interest in the production 
and circulation of media products and/or the economic, historical, 
global, regulatory, or archival dimensions that structure or affect 
media industries is preferred. The successful candidate will have proven 
record of high quality research. The position requires the ability to 
teach undergraduate and graduate courses. Also desirable, but not 
required, is the ability to teach digital video production classes. 
Research or creative programs that have the potential to attract 
external funding is helpful. The Department is home to media scholars 
working in a variety of theoretical and methodological traditions.

Qualifications
A Ph.D. in communication or related field is required. Candidates should 
have a demonstrated record of scholarly research and the potential for 
excellence in teaching. At least three years of significant non-academic 
professional experience in the entertainment industries is also 
desirable. Ability to mentor and direct doctoral and masters students 
also is required. All successful candidates must be able to serve on 
graduate student committees and have the ability to direct theses and 
dissertations.

More about the department, college and university
The Department of Entertainment and Media Studies (EMST) is a new 
department and program in the Grady College, accompanying the Department 
of Advertising and Public Relations, the Department of Journalism, and 
the New Media Institute, which has entered into a closer relationship 
with the department. EMST administers the undergraduate major in 
Entertainment & Media Studies (formerly the major in Mass Media Arts), 
which teaches visual storytelling focused on entertainment. The major 
consists of a required core of four classes focused on storytelling 
(introduction, production, writing, narrative theory). Six elective 
classes provide students with opportunities to deepen their skills in 
areas such as documentary, advanced production, advanced writing, and 
advanced research. All courses in this major are informed by a 
media-studies pedagogy—which includes integration of theory and 
practice and attention to issues of culture, power, identity along with 
media uses and effects. Augmenting the department and institute programs 
is the presence of the Peabody Awards, the oldest and most prestigious 
awards program that recognizes excellence in broadcast and electronic 
media, which has its home in the Grady College. In addition, significant 
experiential learning opportunities exist through the Cannes Film 
Festival Study Abroad Program and the Grady L.A. Summer Study Program. 
The major and its programs position students for jobs in the 
entertainment media industry across, film, television, gaming and other 
new media.
