[ecrea] CFP: SCMS Workshop: Urban Media at the Limits of Memory
Mon Aug 17 19:53:03 GMT 2015
The space-time compression between mass-mediated and material culture
has long extended media analysis to the fields of human geography and
urban studies. However, less work has brought these investigations
together with approaches from memory studies to consider how place and
attachment are received by popular narratives and illuminate urban media
for the cultural present. To that end, the workshop brings together
cultural producers, media theorists and heritage workers to ask how
human and non-human collectives have been imagined, conjured up,
forgotten and returned to a world that is increasingly filtered through
urban media formations.
Topics may include
⢠Architectures, infrastructures and everyday life
⢠Representations of the city in film, television, literature and the arts
⢠Contestations over public space from regional and multinational vantages
⢠Social conflict resulting in war, abandonment and urban destruction
⢠The integration of mass-mediated culture into the fabric of urban space
⢠The heritage and memorial potential of urban media formations
⢠The impact of tourism and gentrification
Short descriptions (80 words), as well as titles and bios should be sent
to (josh.synenko /at/ gmail.com) <mailto:(josh.synenko /at/ gmail.com)> before Aug 21.
