The 8th International Screenwriting Research Network Conference – “Screenwriting, Text and Performance”

Thursday 10th to Saturday 12th September 2015

The 8th International Screenwriting Research Network (SRN) Conference will take place at Senate House, University of London, UK with the support of the Institute of English Studies.

Over 100 papers from 5 Continents will be presented with 32 panels, representing the many aspects of screenwriting research; from performance and character and early screenwriting to digital screenwriting and film adaptation.

The conference has secured three highly regarded keynote speakers:
Hossein Amini, a film writer who was nominated for an Oscar for his adaptation of Henry James’ classic novel Wings of a Dove. He has also written Jude, starring Kate Winslet and Christopher Ecclestone, which won the Edinburgh Film festival prize for Best British Film, and has worked on Gangs of New York, starring Daniel Day Lewis and Leonardo di Caprio. Kathryn Millard, Professor of Film and Creative Arts at Macquarie University, Sydney Australia where she is Research Leader for the newly established Creative Ecologies Lab, a research space for innovation in screen, performance and writing. She is the author of Screenwriting in a Digital Era. Jonathan Powell, Professor of Media at Royal Holloway, and a former Head of Drama at the BBC, responsible for the launch of both EastEnders and Casualty, as well as Dennis Potter’s The Singing Detective and Troy Kennedy Martin’s Edge of Darkness.

An actors and screenwriting panel (names to be confirmed) will be held on Friday 11th Sept.

On Thursday 10th September there will be an early evening event with wine reception at the British Library, the major copyright library and literary archive in the United Kingdom, at which delegates will be introduced to some of the archival material relating to screenwriting. The Library holds the archives of many significant figures in British Screenwriting including Harold Pinter, John Osborne, Angela Carter as well as actors Lawrence Olivier and John Gielgud and agent Peggy Ramsey. We are extremely pleased that guest speaker Sir Ronald Harwood (winner of the academy award in 2003 for Best Adapted Screenplay for The Piano) will be present to talk to Professor Christine Geraghty about his writing and the content of the collection that he has donated to the library.

If you would like to attend this event, please select the 'reception' option when you register.

The FEE for the three day conference is £95 for ‘early bird’ responders (before 19th August so please book asap), and £125 thereafter. The student rate will be £75 for early birds, and £90 thereafter. The fee includes refreshments ( lunch on Thursday) a reception on Wednesday 9th September and a wine reception at the British Library. The conference dinner on Friday 11th September will cost £30 and is bookable on the website.
