(CFP) 1st International Congress on Culture: CULTURES IN MOVEMENT
-
27-29 October 2015
University of Beira Interior
Covilhã, Portugal
-
As it is suggested, from the very beginning, by the name chosen for this
/1st International Congress on Culture: Cultures in Movement/, it aims
do handle culture simultaneously as a single – Culture – and plural –
Cultures – phenomenon.
In fact, the singularity and plurality are the effect of the dialectic
that, from its own origin, is immanent in each one of the cultures: in
one hand, it is the difference that attempts to escape identity, thus
granting its own proper identity; on the other hand, it is the identity
that attempts to abolish the differences, thus assuming itself as
hegemonic difference.
Nevertheless, even though globalization emerges to us, today, as a kind
of historical fatality, it is not an historical fatality the hegemony of
a culture over any other. Culture was always an open field to struggles,
exchanges, negotiations – and we do not forecast reasons for it not
continuing to be so.
And, in this age of increasingly global fluxes, in which history does
not move anymore at the seven leagues boots speed that was addressed by
Hegel but, literally, at the speed of light, each one of the cultures
was taken by some kind of vortex, by some spiral movement that makes
everything tend to become liquid, to make use of the term popularised by
Bauman.
No wonder, thus, that culture became a subject and a central problem of
our time. That same centrality reveals itself, also, in the thematic
areas of this Congress, that include development, technology, cultural
policies, media, art, creative industries or gender and sexuality. Each
one of those areas will uphold, certainly, a good space to discuss
tendencies such as hegemony and counter-hegemony, change and
preservation, interchange and isolation, conflict and dialogue.
Interchange and dialogue are the keywords here, considering firstly the
origins of this Congress, which appears as an additional activity of
academic and scientific cooperation that has been built over the last
years between the Faculty of Arts and Letters of University of Beira
Interior (by means of its Degree in Sciences of Culture) and the
Institute of Humanity, Arts and Sciences of Federal University of Bahia,
Brazil.
However, although the organization of the Congress speaks Portuguese,
Portuguese must not be seen as an excluding factor of other languages
and cultures.
