The objective of this first conference is twofold: namely, to contribute=20
to the study of cultural memory by unlocking narratives about the past=20
(and their canonization), and offer relevant critical observations on=20
the manifestations of cultural memory that are not essentially=20
=91narratives=92. This approach provides a kind of multidisciplinary and=20
interdisciplinary access to cultural memory taken from various perspectiv=
es.

In this context, we are faced the following questions: how do we recall,=20
remember and forget? What stories are =91permitted=92 and which are=20
=91forbidden=92? How does the past determine the present and shape the=20
future? How do the various discourses of the past determine the social=20
and personal identities? How are our deepest emotions, desires and=20
fantasies articulated in the present through the discursive space of=20
memory? What are the relations between memory and monuments, archives=20
and museums? How can we understand the dual nature of monuments: as=20
tools of ideologically driven memory (fixed memory) and/or as constant=20
sources of creative construction and opening up of memory? Does=20
technological development influence the process of remembering the past?=20
What are the implications of a digitalization of memory? What kind of=20
history is created by the massive use of digital technologies (i.e.,=20
online archives that are encoding/decoding their users=92 memories in=20
virtual space)? How do the systems used for production affect the ways=20
that use, protect and work with memory? In what ways is cultural tourism=20
associated with memory? How does it reflect the local and global=20
histories in terms of which narratives are being produced and consumed?

On that note, individual and collective memory within the processes of=20
creating identities provides for the contemporary researcher=20
indispensable links to the myriad present-day realities that are at the=20
same time quite problematic. This duality manifests itself in the=20
creative and conceptual forms of expression. Hence, the aim of the=20
conference is to bring closer the various aspects applied in studying=20
cultural memory. The conference aims at fostering a critical dialogue=20
beyond the boundaries set by various disciplines, thus papers from=20
various disciplines and fields are most welcomed, including art history,=20
literature, anthropology, architecture, philosophy, political science,=20
sociology, cultural geography, cultural studies, media and film studies,=20
ethnology and folklore, economics, history, heritage studies, museum=20

We are seeking proposals for panels within the scope of the Conference.
Panels are organized by internationally recognized experts aiming to=20
bring together researchers on focused topics for an interactive=20

important component of Annual Conference 2013. Panel members are=20
researchers who have done well-known or controversial work related to=20
the theme of the panel. Researchers interested in organizing a special=20
session are invited to submit a formal proposal to=20
(conference /at/ cultcenter.net) by February 1st, 2013.
Before submitting a panel proposal, the organizer of a panel is expected=20
to contact all the proposed panel members and get their agreement to=20
serve as a panel member. A list of questions to be discussed in the=20
panel should be made available to all the panel members well ahead of=20
time for them to prepare their response. Each panel typically allows a=20
