[ecrea] European Media Policy 2, 2013

Fri Dec 13 02:24:51 GMT 2013

Nordicom has published a new issue of European Media Policy. Here are some of the main points:

* In recent months there have been many attacks on journalists and media freedom. Strong criticism has been voiced in the EU Parliament, the Council of Europe and the UN.

* Cultural and audivisual services may, after all, be included in the negotiations on the EU-US trade deal (TTIP).

* Outraged by the revelations of mass surveillance the EU Parliament is conducting an in-depth inquiry on the matter. The issue has also been discussed at the IGF and in the Council of Europe, which points out that surveillance can undermine the protection of journalists' sources.

* The EU data protection reform got a new boost after the surveillance revelations. but now it seems to have stalled again for various reasons.

* The EU wants to boost development of cloud services and the use of big data. But in the Parliament and elsewhere many are concerned about privacy issues.
