How Do We Study Objects? - Analyses in Artefact Studies

A conference to be held at the House of Science and Letters in Helsinki (6 Kirkkokatu) on 8-9 May 2014.

Artefacta - the Finnish Network for Artefact Studies - is pleased to announce that we are now accepting proposals for presentations at the conference 'How Do We Study Objects? - Analyses in Artefact Studies'. The deadline for submitting proposals is 15 January 2014.

Artefacta is an open network of over 700 university researchers, museum curators, students, conservators, collectors, enthusiasts and antiquarians. The network aims at increasing the appreciation of material culture and artefact studies, developing interdisciplinary exchange amongst various academic disciplines, and establishing new contacts between academia, museums, and others interested in objects and their study. Artefacta hosts an online service for disseminating information and promoting discussion.

The theme of the 2014 conference is quite specific: How are objects studied and by what means? How is information produced when material culture is examined? The conference focuses on the diverse methods and analyses available for studying objects, the ways that these means are put to use, and the results that they yield.

We particularly encourage the submission of proposals that deal with one or more tangible objects and their analyses, although theoretical presentations are also welcome. Accordingly, proposals should address the variety of methods used in the humanities or diverse scientific analyses or combinations of these two scholarly traditions.

The topics include, but are not limited to:
- Material analyses
- Analyses of production techniques
- Analyses of object forms
- Analyses of visual motifs
- Stylistic analyses
- Analyses for identifying producers and/or users
- Means of dating objects
- Analyses of significance and meaning
- Analyses of consumption and use

The speakers will represent a wide range of academics, museum professionals, conservators, as well as professionals working in the antiques sector. The conference is academic in character, but speakers are advised to take into account the heterogeneous backgrounds of the participants. Thus, it is recommended, for instance, that specialised terminology be explained to the audience and concrete examples provided.

The presentations will be organised into sessions by the conference committee. The sessions will not be arranged on the basis of traditional divisions between academic disciplines, but rather thematically. The goal is to enhance interdisciplinary dialogue.

The speakers will be notified of acceptance by 15 February 2014.

The languages of the conference are English, Finnish, and Swedish. The proposal should be in the same language as the conference presentation.

There is no conference fee.
