Head - Department of Critical Studies, University of British Columbia,
Okanagan Campus
The Department of Critical Studies at the University of British
Columbia’s Okanagan campus seeks an accomplished academic administrator
and a visionary leader as Head of this exciting community of scholars,
students and staff. The appointment is for a renewable five-year term,
beginning on July 1, 2014 or soon thereafter. The Head reports directly
to the Dean of the Faculty of Creative and Critical Studies and is
assisted by an Associate Head and dedicated professional staff.
The ideal candidate will have a doctoral degree in his or her field,
with a demonstrated record of excellence in scholarship, teaching and
academic leadership, including significant administrative experience at
the departmental or Faculty level. He or she will have a strong and
proven commitment to both disciplinary and interdisciplinary scholarship
and teaching, and to collegial governance. The candidate must have a
record of excellent management skills, mentorship of colleagues and
students, and support for diversity. Intimate knowledge of, and direct
experience with, the management of (re)appointment, tenure, and
promotion processes will be valuable assets, as will familiarity with
budget processes.
The successful candidate will either be in the early stages of the Full
Professor rank or a senior Associate Professor and will hold a tenured
faculty appointment in addition to the Headship. He or she will have
proficiency in one or more of the program areas represented in the
department. While not required, scholarly expertise in any one of the
following fields would be an asset: post-colonial Quebecois literature;
film and related screen culture; or transnational, Diaspora, and/or
Indigenous film.
As the administrative and academic leader of the department, the Head
oversees the day-to-day operations of the unit and serves on the
Faculty’s leadership team. He or she will have primary responsibility
for supervising, mentoring and evaluating faculty and staff; planning
and managing the department’s budget; facilitating program organization
and delivery; undertaking unit reviews; serving on Faculty and
University committees; fostering a collegial working environment; and
representing and advocating for the department within the Faculty and
the University.
As a faculty member, the Head will be expected to maintain an active
research program and will contribute to the department’s teaching
programs and to graduate supervision.
The Department of Critical Studies is housed in the vibrant Faculty of
Creative and Critical Studies. Critical Studies offers both
discipline-based and interdisciplinary programs at the undergraduate and
graduate level, including programs in Art History and Visual Culture,
Cultural Studies, English, French, and Spanish. It also offers courses
in Film, German, Music History and Japanese.
The collegial learning environment of the Faculty of Creative and
Critical Studies focuses on effective teaching, critical and creative
scholarship, and the integration of scholarship and teaching. The
Faculty has established scholarly strength in cultural literacies and
practices, eco cultures, media and digital cultures, and postcolonial
imaginaries, and is committed to an ethos of local involvement, global
