[ecrea] Extended Deadline for CFP of New Media and Participation Conference

Tue Aug 27 18:13:11 GMT 2013

Call For Papers: New Media and Participation (22-23 November 2013, Bahcesehir University, Istanbul)

Extended deadline for Abstracts: September 2, 2013

For Additional Information: nmp.bahcesehir.edu.tr

Conference Theme:

Levels of political participation through the mainstream media, and participation of the public via media production, have been historically low due to the oligopolic structures of the media markets and their centralized models of governance and decision-making.

Although new media have been formed within the very same policy process and capitalistic structure, their accessibility and user-friendliness has opened up new ways of interaction and participation in the mainstream media, as well as the development of community-based and alternative media

Instead of focusing only on the dark sides of the new structures of national, international and global media markets, namely the issues related to the global political economy and the digital divide, the ‘New Media and Participation’ conference aims to provide a space to discuss the opportunities and the challenges of audience’s involvement, and citizen’s engagement, with media and politics.

More specifically, the main subjects of the conference will include, but are by no means limited to the following:

- political theory, old media, new media and participation

- audience research and new media: new methodological horizons

- networked journalism and public involvement

- cross-media production and ‘produsers’

- private and public spheres and civic engagement

- citizenship, civil society and participation

- media literacy and democratic agency

- citizens’ voice, citizens’ media
