We are delighted to announce that the first phase of applications for the first Doctorate Programme in Cultural Studies in Portugal - accredited by A3ES and in accordance with the Bologna Agreement - for the academic year 2013-14 will begin on May 20th and extend until June 11th.

The first phase of applications for the first Doctorate Programme in Cultural Studies in Portugal - accredited by A3ES and in accordance with the Bologna Agreement - for the academic year 2013-14 will begin on May 20th and extend until June 11th. As a result of the partnership established between the Universities of Minho and of Aveiro, specifically concerning the Institute of Social Sciences and the Department of Language and Culture respectively, the Programme will be operated from both of the aforementioned universities, on a rotational basis (the 2013-2013 programme will conducted in the University of Minho).


This third cycle degree of Cultural Studies addresses professional training in areas of cultural creativity, promotion, entertainment, mediation and cultural dissemination, as well as committing to published libraries, editing, centres of information production and cultural events, cultural association, and those responsibility for culture in embassies, institutions, foundations and cultural centres, amongst others.

The training of researchers in this area aims to qualify specialists capable of working as part of multi-disciplinary teams in the resolution of issues such as sustainable development, intercultural communications, business ethics, film studies, gender studies, media, internet, post-colonialism, preservation, cultural tourism, cultural marketing, cultural policies, bio-power, bio-politics, the genetization of the human being, imaginary anthropotechnology etc.


The research in this area needs to address the necessity of trained researchers, capable of examining environments which are intrinsically linked with diverse scientific areas such as Communications, History, Geography, Philosophy, Sociology, Psychology, Literature and Heritage, amongst others.


The tuition of the doctorate students in the field of Cultural Studies - apart from the areas with which it is associated, such as Literature, Philosophy, History, Communications, Sociology, Geography and Anthropology - will develop the skills required to resolve concrete issues which engage populations and public authorities (issues such as social discrimination, xenophobia, extreme nationalism, social tensions and weak civic participation) and economic powers (the creation of museums, festivals, events, tourist attractions and the cultural industries in general), and the various social groups who wish to see themselves recognised in representation of the world, requiring the legitimisation of new socio-cultural practices.


This Programme also seeks to stimulate the capacity to produce autonomous research in multidisciplinary contexts - which can be international, national or local - and to develop reading and writing skills in scientific contexts, in addition to reinforcing and deepening the critical aspects of the taught content.


The Doctorate Programme in Cultural Studies welcomes students who wish to develop their research skills in both the English and Portuguese languages.
