Coventry School of Art and Design

Two Senior Research Fellows / Research Fellows - Digital Media

£35,247 - £50,187 (Research Fellow) or £45,942 - £57,324 (Senior
Research Fellow) pro rata per annum, full-time, fixed-term 12-month
appointment from July 2013

Digital media is one of Coventry School of Art and Design’s (CSAD) main
research themes. The RAE 2008 acknowledges world-leading research in
all CSAD’s departments. 60% of the research submitted was judged as
internally excellent. Digital media is also the focus of the
University’s cross-institutional Digital Media Grand Challenge and its
new Centre for Disruptive Media (http://disruptivemedia.org.uk/).

Research in digital media at Coventry has three main areas of activity:

Open Media;
Creative Archiving and Digitisation;
Immersive, Mobile and Interactive Communications.

All three areas adopt a critical Digital Humanities approach which
involves exploring and experimenting with some of the humanities’ core
foundational concepts and values, both theoretically and practically.
This includes ideas of the author, subjectivity, originality, the book,
the archive, the law, copyright, piracy and the (post)human.

Research Opportunity
Two fixed-term research positions are available in digital media to support:

1) the development of a Scholarly Publishing Office within the
University, designed to open, share, and preserve the University’s
scholarship and research on an open access, open data and open source basis.

2) the exploration of the potential offered to HE by the Open Education
movement in the context of the disruptive effects the Internet, social
and mobile media are having on current university systems and practices.

Candidates at Senior Research Fellow level should hold a PhD, or
equivalent, in an appropriate digital media-related subject, supported
by a strong international academic research profile in digital media,
digital humanities, digital publishing or open education. Their
professional experience should be reflected in a significant number of
peer reviewed publications and conferences presentations, as well as a
successful track record of research funding, both as Principal
Investigator and in support of Principal Investigator. In addition, they
should be able to provide evidence of leadership in relation to a
research group or network or community of practice.

Candidates at Research Fellow level should have recently completed a PhD
or be close to completing a PhD, or equivalent, in an appropriate
digital media-related subject. They will have at least 3 years
experience of working as a researcher in digital media, digital
humanities, digital publishing or open education. Their professional
experience should be reflected in their peer reviewed publications and
conference presentations, as well as their record of assisting Principal
Investigators in preparing research funding bids. In addition, they
should be able to substantiate a current knowledge and understanding of
their discipline.
