JOB DESCRIPTION

The Centre for Media and Journalism Studies is seeking a PhD candidate for the project 'In search of the public: The changing role of the audience in journalistic practice'. The project is connected to the Rosalind Franklin Fellowship of Dr Tamara Witschge.

The PhD candidate will be part of a research project investigating how audience participation and non-institutional news production affects journalistic practices. Candidates are invited to within this theme develop a feasible sub-project focusing on a research question related to the main theme of the project. Relevant questions include (but are not limited to):

	• How can we map and understand digital practices of non-institutional news and information production and their implications for journalism and democracy?
	• What participative activities do audiences undertake and what are the implications for our understanding of journalism?
	• How have journalistic and academic notions of the public and public participation evolved historically?
	• How do journalists currently view the public and their role as providers of a public service?
	• What are audience perceptions of the role of the public as well as journalists in news production?

The PhD candidate is expected to:
	• complete a PhD dissertation (in English) within the four year period
	• conduct empirical research
	• write at least two articles (based on PhD chapters)
	• participate in research meetings of the Centre for Media and Journalism Studies and PhD training in the local and national Graduate Schools
	• participate in meetings with international experts and present papers at (international) conferences.

QUALIFICATIONS

	• completed MA degree (or near-completion, to be completed at the starting date of the project) in one of the following or related disciplines: Media Studies, Journalism Studies, Communication Science, History, Sociology
	• excellent command of English (oral and written)
	• excellent academic record (as shown by a list of MA-grades and timely conclusion of MA-education)
	• ability to work independently, but as part of a team
	• interested in being part of an international research community.

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT
The University of Groningen offers the PhD a salary of € 2,062 (scale 50, number 0) gross per month in the first year, up to a maximum of € 2,638 (scale 50, number 3) gross per month in the final year, based on a full-time position. The successful candidate will first be offered a temporary position of 1,5 years with the perspective of extension for another 2,5 years. After the first year there will be an assessment of the candidate's results and the progress of the project to decide whether the employment will be continued.

The preferred starting date is 1 September 2013.

Interviews will take place around mid May.
