Fri Jan 25 22:42:34 GMT 2013

The Department of Media and Communication at the University of Leicester is pleased to offer two Graduate Research Assistantships for October 2013 entry to its Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) programme. These posts will pay full-time University UK/EU tuition fees for four years and include an annual maintenance grant.

Graduate Research Assistantships allow you to fund your PhD study through part-time work with the University.

1. GRA and PhD scholarship in Media and Communication

The post is open to applicants wishing to pursue doctoral research in any area of media and communication studies that can be supervised by the Department's academic staff: http://www2.le.ac.uk/departments/media/postgraduate/research-degrees/staff-research-interests

The Department of Media and Communication has an existing, successful group of three Graduate Research Assistants; this post replaces one of these who will finish their PhD in the summer of 2013 to sustain our complement. Members of the department make bids for the use of Graduate Research Assistant time, which are reviewed by the Research Director. Graduate Research Assistants are a valuable part of the Department's vibrant research culture.

Closing date: 28 February 2013

The post is open to applicants wishing to pursue doctoral research in the growing interdisciplinary area of Migration, Gender, and New Media. We welcome research proposals on any of the following themes:

? the transformation of gender roles through migration

? transnational political subjectivities and citizenship

? cosmopolitanism, diasporas, and the circulation of symbolic forms

? notions of home and identity, especially in the context of transnational communication

? the role of communication technologies in sending remittances and the gendered dimensions of these processes

The empirical focus of the research is open to all regions or populations. We particularly welcome applicants who wish to develop comparative research or who wish to explore any of the above themes in the empirical context of Leicester as a multicultural city.

The successful applicant will be supervised by Dr Mirca Madianou (Department of Media and Communication) and Dr Leah Bassel (Department of Sociology).
