Job Description

Boston University's College of Communication invites applications for 2 Assistant Professor tenure-track positions in Emerging Media Studies. These positions will be part of an exciting new program at the College that focuses on emerging and social media in the context of the College's already strong programs in traditional media research. The program includes development of new M.A. and Ph.D. programs and a cross-unit Center for Mobile Communication Studies. These positions require a Ph.D. in Communication or related area at the time of hire, strong grounding in theory and research, teaching experience and a publication record. Candidates with potential to establish a funded research program are especially encouraged to apply.

Areas of research of particular interest to the search committee include:

(1) Mobile communication. Methodological sophistication is desired, especially in quantitative analysis of longitudinal behavioral data concerning political or interpersonal communication.

(2) Big data. Quantitative analysis of human communication behavior related to emerging media technology. Skills sought include data mining, secondary analysis of large data sets, visual displays of quantitative information, and dynamic data mapping. The candidates should have previously connected these skills with substantive topics related to emerging media studies.

(3) Creative behaviors of social media users. Rigorous social scientific analysis of user behavior related to co-creation and consumption of emerging media content. Of particular interest is the relationship between these activities and traditional media and/or social media entrepreneurship.

Duties will include teaching courses in Emerging Media Studies and in the candidate's areas of expertise and the opportunity to serve as assistant director of the Center for Mobile Communication Studies. Incumbents will be expected to conduct an active program of research consistent with Boston University's standing as a Research I University and member of the AAU. Salary is dependent on qualifications. The positions are subject to available funding.
