Job assignments
Doctoral studentship in Media and Communication Studies specialising in
Strategic Communication.
The successful candidate will primarily conduct research studies.
The doctoral student is expected to participate actively in the research
and teaching environment at the department and be prepared to engage in
departmental duties, primarily teaching, of a maximum of 20 per cent of
the post. The Department of Strategic Communication is Sweden's largest
study and research environment in strategic communication and one of the
major units of its kind in Europe. The activities are based at Campus
Helsingborg, which combines the traditions and high qualities of
Lund University with a new and dynamic environment of a
cross-disciplinary mindset. The Department of Strategic Communication
provides BA and MA programmes, and is a dynamic research environment
with lively international contacts that welcomes cross-disciplinary
initiatives. The research conducted at the department deals with a large
number of areas within strategic communication but mainly with crisis
communication, communication as a profession, new media, organisation
and democratisation processes. For more information about the
department, please visit the website at http://www.isk.lu.se.
The position will be affiliated with the Department of
Strategic Communication, which currently employs four doctoral students
specialising in strategic communication. Strategic communication is
concerned with the study of the management, planning and implementation
of targeted communication processes between organisations and their
stakeholders. The discipline is based on internationally recognised
research within public relations, organisational communication and, to
some extent, marketing communications, and can be researched at the
levels of societies, organisations and individuals. An
undergraduate degree associated with strategic communication, media and
communication studies or the equivalent and experience of the field are
desirable for the post.
Eligibility/Entry Requirements
A person that meets the general entry requirements for third-cycle
courses and study programmes if he or she has been awarded a
second-cycle qualification, satisfied the requirements for courses
comprising at least 240 credits of which at least 60 credits were
awarded in the second cycle, or acquired substantially
equivalent knowledge in some other way in Sweden or abroad.
In addition to the general entry requirements for third-cycle courses
and study programmes, the doctoral student must have at least 30
second-cycle credits in Media and Communication Studies or have acquired
equivalent knowledge (in strategic communication, for example) in some
other way in Sweden or abroad. The doctoral student must also have
completed a second-cycle independent project worth at least 15 credits.
Those who meet the general entry requirements for doctoral programmes
before 1 July 2007 will also be considered to meet the general entry
requirements for third-cycle courses and study programmes after that,
however, until no later than the end of June 2015. The successful
candidate must have proficiency in English that enables him or her
to benefit from the required reading and third-cycle courses and to
participate actively in seminars. Proficiency in a Scandinavian language
is desirable but not a requirement.
Basis of Assessment
The regulations on employment as a doctoral student are to be found in
the Higher Education Ordinance (SFS 1998:80). Only those who have been
admitted to third-cycle courses and study programmes at a higher
education institution may be appointed to doctoral studentships. When an
appointment to a doctoral studentship is to be made, the ability of the
student to benefit from third-cycle courses and study programmes shall
primarily be taken into account. Major emphasis is placed on
the applicant's Master's thesis (or equivalent degree project) and the
submitted research project plan.
The application must include
1) a CV with certified copies of the degree certificate, grade
transcripts and other relevant certificates,
2) one copy of the Master's thesis and any other research publications

interests and aims with the third-cycle studies,
4) a PhD thesis plan describing the proposed research project (no more
than 5 pages), and
