The Department of Communication Studies at Clemson University (Clemson,
SC) announces the opening of up to three tenure-track positions.
Positions are Department Chair, Assistant Professor of Pop
Culture/Public Communication, and Assistant-Associate Professor with
open specialization (pending funds).
Department Chair
The Department of Communication Studies at Clemson University seeks
applications for the position of Department Chair, which is a
tenure-line position with faculty rank at the Associate or Full
Professor level, to begin July 1, 2013 or earlier. We seek candidates
who are established senior scholars, with a doctorate and
research/teaching expertise that contribute to the department’s
undergraduate and graduate programs, and at least one year of
department-level administrative experience. We are looking for
leadership that focuses on fostering a supportive environment for
faculty and advancing departmental goals. A record of or potential for
successful fundraising is a plus. Responsibilities for the position
include working collaboratively with college and university
administrators, facilitating student recruitment, fund-raising, budget
administration, and personnel management. The candidate appointed to
this position should possess a spirit suitable to collaboration with the
Dean of the College of Architecture, Arts and Humanities and other
administrative offices in responding to such external challenges and
opportunities as student recruitment, fund-raising, and budget
challenges. The ideal candidate will be fiscally responsible, possess
excellent interpersonal skills, and demonstrate a strong sense of
stewardship.
Our department offers a competitive BA in Communication Studies with, on
average, 250 undergraduate majors; an MA in Communication, Technology
and Society; and is moving towards approval of a BA in Sports
Communication, to begin Fall 2013. The department also participates in
an interdisciplinary doctoral program, Rhetorics, Communication and
Information Design, and is managing the design and implementation of a
new Social Media Listening Center for the College of Architecture, Arts
and Humanities. The department contributes to general education through

Up to Two Positions: Assistant Professor & Assistant/Associate Professor
The Department of Communication Studies at Clemson University invites
applications for up to two tenuretrack positions at the
Assistant/Associate Professor level to begin August 15, 2013.
Requirements include: a Ph.D. (in hand by August 2013) in Communication
or a closely related field, a record of conference presentations and
peer-reviewed publications that strongly indicates future success in
scholarly research, evidence of excellent teaching, a record of service,
and the ability to teach other courses that will contribute to our
undergraduate and graduate curriculum. Where appropriate, the candidate
will be expected to collaborate with colleagues to advance the research
mission of Clemson University through pursuit of external funding,
strategic development initiatives, and collaborative partnerships.
Position 1: Assistant Professor, Tenure-Track: Popular Culture/Public
Communication
Applicants should have active research agendas and teaching expertise in
popular culture/public communication. Candidates should primarily work
with critical-cultural theories and methods and be able to teach
undergraduate and graduate courses in those areas of communication
theory and research methods (e.g., discourse analyses, textual analyses,
historic/archival research, visual culture). Ability to teach additional
qualitative and/or quantitative theory and methods classes is a plus.
Position 2: Assistant/Associate Professor, Tenure-Track: Open
Specialization (pending funds)
While specialization is open, applicants should support one or more of
the following departmental emphases: (a) communication technologies,
including social media, transmedia, convergence, etc.; (b) strategic
communication/public relations/advertising; or (c) broadcasting/mass
communication/journalism. Methodological specialization is open;
however, candidates with teaching and research expertise in quantitative
research methods are preferred. Candidates for appointment at the
Associate Professor rank should possess a record of or potential for
generating external funding.
