Title of the DSh Seminar: “Historical and contemporary representations
of Islam and the West in media and culture”, Tuesday, December 04, 2012,
Brussels, Belgium
Culture, media, and cultural identity have significant roles in
representing ‘others’ in negative or positive ways. In this case, the
questions such as ‘what is being represented, how the ‘others’ is
represented, how people are inspired by the representation, whom the
representation belongs to, what the representation means to ‘us’ and the
‘others’, how people make sense of it’ are some among many other
questions that matter in cultural and media portrayals. Relating to our
topic, the followings are the main questions that will be attempted to
discuss about in the seminar:
How Islam and the West are represented in Western or Islamic media and
culture?
How these portrayals influence our perception of them?
Aim: The aim of the workshop is to bring together scholars and students
to promote discussions and understanding across the ways of improving
the relationships between Islam and the West and the role the media and
culture play in this matter.
Participants: We warmly welcome PhD students who are doing their
researches on the historical and/or contemporary representation of Islam
and the West in culture and/or media.
