Call for articles for a special issue of the International Review of
Social Research on “Health and Communication”
Health communication is concerned with “the powerful roles performed by
human and mediated communication in health care delivery and health
promotion”. It is an extremely broad research area, examining many
different levels and channels of communication in a wide range of social
contexts.
Following Thompson, Dorsey, Millet and Parrott one can didactically
speak about three main spheres of influence: societal, expert discourse
and lay discourse. At the same time, the levels for health communication
analysis include intrapersonal, interpersonal, group, organizational,
and societal communication. In addition, health communication inquiry
involves examination of a broad range of communication channels,
including face-to-face and mediated communication between providers and
receivers, among members of health care teams, and among patients (e.g.,
via support groups).
The International Review of Social Research is seeking contributions for
a special issue devoted to “Health and Communication”. The review is
particularly interested in studies of new approaches to health and
communication that have the potential to increase the body of knowledge
on the subject and catalyze more such research in the future.
Contributions exploring any context of health communication are welcome.
These may include, but are not limited to:
1. Policy of Health Communication
2. Organizational aspects of Health Communication
3. Culture and Health Communication
4. Health Communication in the Community
5. Health Communication in Mass Media
6. Interpersonal Health Communication
7. Technology and Health Communication
